Why Eyelashes Thin out

Often, we have envied supermodels and female actors who can bring on the allure with just a bat of their luscious eyelashes. They also serve as a grim contrast to the reality of thinning eyelashes.

At the height of youth, human beings are physically endowed with so many assets - thick eyelashes being one of them. However, as one ages, regeneration of the hairs surrounding the eye becomes less profound, and the tendency for these individual lashes to fall out becomes more rapid. Thus, some who still desire the youthful eroticism that lush and long eyelashes bring resort to eyelash extensions, as well as other forms of lash enhancement - natural or otherwise.

Other than age, there are other factors that cause thinning eyelashes. This may spell medical trouble, or other more invasive reasons.

Trauma. How do you wash your face? Dermatologists do recommend washing the face to take away dead skin cells and wash off makeup and grime. However, vigorous washing is not recommended; otherwise, you scrape off even new skin cells and damage your skin. Another victim of vigorous washing will be your eyelashes. A more gentle makeup remover or cotton bud doused with mineral oil will be better in cleaning those delicate fringes rather than scrubbing them to Kingdom Come.

Health problems. Sometimes, thinning eyelashes may only be a symptom of a bigger health issue. Hyper- or hypothyroidism has a tendency to let hair fall off, including the eyelashes. So does alopecia areata, an immune system disorder that causes hair to fall off. Patients undergoing chemotherapy have also seen massive hair loss during their treatments. Thus, the thickness of eyelashes could also determine the health status of a person.

Chemical allergies. You may not know it but you may be allergic to certain eye makeup, mascara in particular. If you are a constant mascara wearer and you are also bothered by airborne particles like dust or pollen, then perhaps it is time to discontinue use of the product. Other than probably being sensitive to chemicals found in mascara, eyelashes tend to catch these airborne particles in between them, thus causing even more irritation than usual.

Trichotillomania. This is a psychological disorder where a person pulls out his own hair on impulse. We commonly see patients with this condition yanking immense tufts of hair from their scalp, but this is not the only area of the body where hair is violently pulled out. Others even go for the eyelashes by plucking them out at the roots.

Blepharitis. This particular medical problem is bacterial in nature. The eyelids become swollen due to the over-production of bacteria naturally found on the skin. The swelling of the eyelids is followed by falling out of the eyelashes, either due to excessive rubbing or blockage of the eyelid's oil glands. This condition can be treated and controlled simply through proper hygiene and gentle cleaning of the eyelashes to sweep off the oil gland blockage.

So next time you feel that your eyelashes are thinning out, better see a doctor to find out the cause and to get the proper treatment. Proper hygiene and gentle cleaning of that area will also help in keeping your fringes' health.
