There are different features you have to consider when you buy a 3D printer. You're basically not looking for more features per se but you should be interested in getting better quality features. Remember that quality always come with a price especially when you're dealing with new technology.
Price
Many consumers will usually begin making judgments on different machine models according to 3D printer price. Just like any other device or machine that you can buy anywhere, the more features there are in a printer the more expensive it becomes. The really pricey units out there cost several thousand dollars but they are packed with a handsome array of useful features.
Cheap 3D printer models, usually the ones on sale for less than $800 only, have the most basic features you can expect. The idea of course is to purchase the model that suits your needs. If you don't need to print on metallic mediums then there's no point in getting a printer that has that capability.
Build Area
The build area refers to the maximum size of the object that a 3D printer can create. It also refers to the work area where a printer creates its images. Obviously, the bigger the work area or space that your printer can work on, the bigger the object it can make.
To date, there are 3D printer designs that can be used to replicate machine parts. To do that, you have to print it one part at a time. The smallest printers can only produce a 5-inch cube while the biggest ones can make 9 inch objects.
Filament Width
Different printer models have different filament widths. Most of the 3D printer models you'll find today is mounted with plastic filaments. These filaments come in different widths with the 3 mm and the 1.75 mm wide filaments as the most common ones. Consumers can use any type of filament regardless of the brand.
Expensive printers usually have different size filaments. These are supplied exclusively by their individual makers. They're definitely more expensive than standard filaments.
Feature Resolution
Just like regular printers, 3D printers also have output resolutions. Remember that the higher the resolution, the finer the details that can be seen. If you're looking for really fine prints, look for printers that have 0.03 cm resolution.
Number of Extruders
This is another important factor to consider when you buy a 3D printer. Many commercially sold printers out there only include one extruder in their design. There are also single extruder open source models as well as printers that have multiple extruders. The more extruders you have in your unit, the more colors your printer can produce. The thickness of every layer produced by your printer also depends on the size of the extruder.
Layer Thickness
3D printers make their prints in layers. The larger the layer thickness means thicker and more obvious layers that a printer makes in each pass. Thicker layers make the output less realistic. Make sure that the thickness is between 0.2 to 0.3 mm.
Printing Speed
Faster print speeds usually mean less wait time. Most of the time, it will take about an hour before your printer can produce a single object. The print speed can be affected by the type of material being used to print an object and the speed of the extruder.
