Identifying the right colon cancer stages can help prevent the condition from worsening. Certain stages have specific treatment involved so it is better to identify the signs early.
If you have regular constipation problems and unusual loss of weight, you might wonder whether you're experiencing colon cancer symptoms. The thing is you will not know if you really have cancer unless you get medically tested. The signs of colon cancer are vague such that they may also indicate other stomach problems such as diverticulitis.
Below are colon cancer stages and the specific treatment needed for each stage:
Stage 0
This is the earliest stage of the five colon cancer stages. During this stage, abnormal cells are detected in the colon wall, but they have not spread beyond the inner linings yet. Whether these cells are cancerous or not, surgery is needed to take them out . The type of surgery will depend on the tumor size. Normally, local excision will be good enough; but if the tumor is big, colon resection is required.
Stage I
When the cancer cells spread from the interior layer of colon to the muscle layer of the colon wall, this is considered to be the second of the colon cancer stages. Removal of the cancer cells through surgery is needed. If there are more affected areas, then additional surgery is required. Partial colectomy or removal of a certain part of the colon should be done to eliminate all the cancer cells.
Stage II
Once the cancer cells began to grow in the nearby tissue, this is considered as Stage II. The standard operation in this stage is also partial colectomy. The surgery will require removal of part of the colon and even some of lymph nodes. During this stage, the doctor may advise chemotherapy after surgery to prevent recurrence. Some surgeons recommend radiation therapy to make sure that all cancer cells are killed.
Stage III
During this stage, cancer cells have now developed in lymph nodes but not so much as to escalate to other body parts. There are a series of treatments needed to confirm that cancer cells are eliminated. However, dosage and treatments may vary depending on patient's age and health condition.
The typical series of treatment include:
Removal of the colon section affected by cancer cells.
Chemotherapy after surgery. Usually, FOLFOX and CapeOx regimens are needed to treat the cancer. FOLFOX refers to a series of drugs named 5-FU, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin imposed on the patient's body to kill cancer cells. CapeOx, on the contrary uses capecitabine and oxaliplatin.
Chemotherapy or radiation therapy is needed to guarantee that cancer cells are completely removed from the system. However, chemo has its associated risks. Therefore, undergoing chemo is the discretion of the patient and family members.
Stage IV
This is the final phase of colon cancer stages. During this stage, cancer cells have now reached different body organs and tissues such as lymph nodes, lungs, liver and prolong the patient's life. On the other hand, chemotherapy is highly advised if the cancer cells cannot be removed by mere surgery.
The only way to get proper treatment is to recognize the specific colon cancer stages through consultation with the doctor and proper diagnosis.
