Upon the diagnosis of colorectal cancer, doctors would normally explain the different colon cancer stages to make the patient and the family understand the procedures that they need to undertake. For most cases, the explanation is accompanied by an illustration to make the absorption of information more efficient.
In any type of cancer, it is crucial to determine where the cancer cells have multiplied. This search is referred to as the STAGING process. Information extracted in this phase would also determine the particular stage of the cancer.
Different colon cancer stages require different forms of treatment. Most of the time, more aggressive treatments are given to cancer patients who are at the penultimate to final stages. To know specifically the stages and treatment to be given, the patient may need to undergo the following medical procedures and tests:
Procedure #01: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
This process involves the use of radio waves, a magnet and a computing device to produce a clear picture of the patient's colon. The picture comprises of a series of detailed photos that can give a clear view of the inside of the colon. To perform this procedure, Gadolinium (a chemical substance) is injected into the patient through IV. This substance surrounds the cancer cells, which will then appear bright in the photo produced by the machine. These chemical and mechanical processes are referred to as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Procedure #02: CAT Scan
This procedure is often used in the many colon cancer stages. The equipment comprises an x-ray machine and a computer. The procedure creates a set of detailed photos of internal organs shown from different angles through the procedure called computerized tomography. To make the photos appear more clearly, the patient is normally required to swallow dye or be injected with it.
Procedure #03: Chest X-ray
This is one of the most basic but very reliable procedures. A visual representation of what is inside the human body can be produced with the use of an energy beam. A film is produced with the image taken and is interpreted by a doctor.
Procedure #04:
Positron Emission Tomography Scan (PET scan). This procedure is specifically done to locate malignant tumor in the body. A different type of sugar is injected through IV and is then scanned using the apparatus. When the sugar reaches a malignant tumor, it will highlight it to be shown on the screen photo. This is possible as active cells of malignant tumor have the tendency to absorb more glucose as compared to the healthy cells.
Procedure #05:
Carcinoembryonic Antigen Assay (CEA). While this procedure appears simple, it is also one of the most efficient ways to determine colon cancer stages. The test involves extracting a blood sample from the patient and checking it to identify the presence of CEA. This particular component is produced by both normal and cancer cells. Going beyond the normal level is an indication that the patient may be in higher stages of cancer.
Apart from the aforementioned staging procedures, the amount of cancer cells can also be tested through the most conventional methods like CBC and Biopsy. The important thing to remember is that no matter how complicated or frightening the idea of having cancer is, it is essential to understand completely the different colon cancer stages to identify the best treatment possible.
