Colon cancer stages are far more specific than in any other types of cancer. As with the other types of cancer, it also has four stages. What sets it apart from other types is that during the last three stages, there are also sub-stages.
To understand this better, it is vital to know how cancer cells tend to spread to the other parts of the body.
Through the blood- When cancer cells reach the blood vessels, they then 'travel' in the other parts of the body through the bloodstream. Once the cancer cells reached the bloodstream, the condition may progress into higher colon cancer stages.
Through tissue- Initially, the cancer could start spreading by infecting the nearby areas where it has originally developed. In the case of colon cancer, the rectum and the intestines are the first target.
Through the Lymph system- When the cancer grows into the surrounding tissues, it then reaches the lymph vessels.
Below are the descriptions of colon cancer stages:
Stage 0 - This is referred to as Carcinoma in Situ. In this stage, there are abnormal cells developing in the innermost layer (also called as mucosa) of the colon. These abnormal cells may likely turn into cancer.
Stage I- From abnormal cells, they have not become cancer cells and have travelled from mucosa to the submucosa. At this stage, cancer may quickly spread in the muscular layer of the wall of the colon.
Stage II A- The cancer has already reached the muscle area and the serosa. This refers to the outermost layer of the wall.
Stage IIB- The cancer has already reached the outermost layer of the wall. In this stage, doctors will start to give aggressive treatment to prevent the cancer from reaching the nearby organs.
Stage IIC- This time, cancer has already travelled from the outermost layer or serosa to the other organs nearby.
Stage IIIA- In this stage, cancer has reached at least a single lymph node. When cancer cells have started to form in the surrounding tissues of the lymph nodes, it is also regarded to be at the same stage.
Stage IIIB- In this stage, cancer has already spread to a minimum of 4 closest lymph nodes (bit not more than 6. Continuous formation of cancer cells in the neighboring tissues is also one of the indicators.
Stage IIIC- Cancer has reached serosa, the nearby organs and about 4-6 lymph nodes. Tissues surrounding the other lymph nodes may also start to develop cancer cells.
Stage IVA- In this stage, more organs are in danger of infection. Cancer may appear in organs that are distant from the colon itself. These organs include the ovary, lungs and the liver.
Stage IVB- In this final phase of the colon cancer stages, the cancer cells already reached the abdominal wall.
The rates through which the stages go up vary from one patient to another. Most of the time, the patient's resistance to medication and measures accelerates the spread of cancer cells. It is good to know though that for all colon cancer stages, corresponding procedures are now available.
