If you wish to seriously pursue a profession as a voiceover artist, you should have following qualities that a good professional voice talent has:

1. Good, strong voice – This is the most basic requirement that a voice talent should possess. A strong, solid voice is very important, since advertisements need to catch the attention of its target audience within the first three to five seconds of the ad. A weak, pitchy voice may turn off viewers and cause them to skip the ad or not pay attention to it. As a professional voice over artist, it is imperative that you keep your voice as melodious and ear pleasing as possible.
2. Clear diction – The wittiest script is useless if the listeners cannot understand a word of it. A voice over artist should make sure that he or she pronounces each word as clearly as possible, using the correct accent of the language that the client requires. This is especially important for languages that have similar words but different phonetics. For example, American and British English share most of their words, but their accents differ in some of their letters. The letter "r" is often pronounced silently in British English, but is always heard in American English. As an excellent voice talent, you should know the differences in the accents of similar languages, and use the appropriate one for the ad you are doing.
3. Voice acting – A Professional voice talent should know how to give life to his lines. Even a simple laundry soap commercial can be made more interesting if it is given a catchy jingle or a witty dialogue. It is the job of the voice over talent to do just that. This can be extra challenging since voice over artists are not seen in the video, and can only use their voice to get the message across. A good voice over artist should know how to give the proper emotion to his or her lines, when to exaggerate, and when to shift his or her voice to a more businesslike tone.

A good professional voice talent also needs to be dedicated to his craft. If you truly wish to become one, you should constantly try to learn more about the art of voice overs. You should also be open to suggestions on how you can improve the quality of the commercial you are doing. Attending trainings and workshops is a good way to improve your skill. You can also rehearse your narrator's voice by reading newspapers and books out loud. The important thing is that you are willing to learn more and practice as often as you can.
