Ah, wild game meats, be it pheasant or bison, it's a hearty sort of gourmet food. The only problem is how to get it. In the olden days, if you weren't a hunter or at least a friend of a hunter, then you were out of luck when it comes to wild game meats. Fortunately, in this modern age, you can easily buy wild game meats, be it online or at your local grocery store.
What is game meat? Game meat is the meat from any animal that is not typically raised in a farm, but rather hunted for food. In North America, the most common kind of game meat comes from ducks, rabbits, and deer. However, thousands of different kinds of animals are hunted and eaten for meat; these include some of the more exotic species like kangaroos, bison, and zebras.
But why eat game meat? What's wrong with good old farm grown beef? For starters, game meat has neither additives nor preservatives in it. This means that the meat you get is fresh from Mother Nature and good for you. Aside from that, since the animal is allowed to move about freely and forage for food in the wild, it develops stronger muscles and stores less fat. For the consumer, this means that compared to farm raised meat like chicken, their wild game meats have a firmer texture, higher protein content, lower fat content and a more unique flavor.
One of the most convenient places to find wild game meats is in your local grocery store or supermarket. They may be easy to miss, but any store worth its weight in salt will have a decent selection of game meat. Usually located in the gourmet meat section, these meats are sourced from well known brands like Fossil Farms and Broadleaf Game.
Otherwise you could purchase wild game meats from online gourmet meat shops. The advantage of these online stores as opposed to their physical counterparts is that the online shops have a broad selection of wild game. On the other hand, getting meat ordered online takes much longer than driving to the local meat shop and buying from there, taking up to one week in certain areas but taking as little as a day in others (this is about the same time as it takes to defrost meat).
But, at least in the US, the law disallows the selling of game meat straight from the wild. This means that the meat sold in local supermarkets and online gourmet meat shops are not actually wild game, per se. What they do is raise the wild animals in special farms where they can express their natural behavior, foraging and roaming around like they would do in the wild. Despite this significant difference in source, the game meat from these special farms is still as delicious as the game meat from truly wild animals. But wait, there's more; aside from the taste, game meat from both sources is also identical in their nutritional composition like Omega 3 content and protein levels.
