Electric vehicles (EVs) are getting more popular, but they are still limited in production and distribution. Electric or "green" cars are simply loved by environmentalists because of the lack of harmful emissions from tailpipes. Although EVs have distinct benefits, they are not the perfect rides anyone could easily appreciate or obsess for. Listed below are the pros and cons of EVs:
Pros
Sleek ride - EVs are quiet and quick rides; they run very quietly and very smoothly. This is because EVs lack the noisy running of internal combustion engines and motors. Battery-powered cars give drivers the "futuristic" experience of riding cars that do not depend on gasoline to run. Additionally, EVs offer high torque capacity wherein they can quickly accelerate to a breathtaking speed.
No more visits to the gas station - EVs will never ever require you to get in line at a gas station just to refill your tank with fuel. You will just have to recharge your EV whenever you get home. Once you pull into the garage, just reach for the plug and push it into the charging inlet. Once you get up in the morning, you will have your EV ready for another day of smooth driving that can go up to 100 miles, depending on the model of your EV.
Affordable operation and maintenance - Electricity is omnipresent and cheap in most parts of the world. It is cheaper to pay for than fuel or gas. EVs are also power-efficient; every bit of electric power is optimally consumed, unlike in gasoline-powered cars where the combustion process of engines can waste a lot of fuel or gas without even running. As for maintenance, EVs only need to be checked if the wheels are rotating properly and if the tires are adequately inflated; they do not need any oil changing and other car engine maintenance required by traditional fueled vehicles.
Free of pollutant emissions - EVs do not have tailpipes; they do not emit pollutant gases that can mix with the air and harm human lungs. So when you use an EV, you are actually promoting better air quality-no credible researcher or scientist could oppose that.
Cons
Limited range - Most EVs can only run 80 to 100 miles on full charging. Although 100 miles is already enough and even plenty for most drivers, there are times that unexpected traffic jams and rerouting can cause problems. Although public recharging areas are now widely available, it would still be hard for an EV driver to locate places near their work areas where they can recharge.
Long charge time - An EV is reliable except when you forget to plug it in overnight. EVs usually need at least one hour of charging to add 20 to 25 miles of range; so if you will need the full 100 miles, you will have to recharge your EV for at least 5 hours.
Higher price tag - EVs are cost-efficient in terms of power consumption and maintenance; however, purchasing the cars may take more than it will for small or mid-sized gas-powered vehicles.
Limited choice - EVs have limited numbers of brands and models; there aren't too many designs or features that customers can choose from.
