Buying second hand vehicles like motor bikes, quads, trucks, and trailers can be difficult if you do not know what you should look for or how to check if they are in good running condition. You can inquire about the different brands and models available at the dealers nearest to you, but you have to be mindful since they are on the selling side and they would not assist much in disproving the quality of their second hand vehicles. You should ask for assistance from someone who knows a lot about bikes and trucks during your test drives.
Here are some guidelines on how to assess used vehicles before purchasing:
Resist buying on the first visit to your dealer
It is not wise to buy the first vehicle you see or the first one the dealer offers you. Be sure to bring a flashlight and a friend with you who also uses the same vehicle you are about to buy and inspect the vehicle together. Before heading to the dealer, it would also be wise to practice inspections on your friend's vehicle.
Inspect general appearance and outer parts
You must make sure that the second hand vehicles you are planning to purchase are clean and the chassis are in good shape-no dents or bulges. You should also check for scratches and scrapes on the paint. Even a slight deformity can indicate that the vehicle could have been crashed or swept against another object or vehicle, which could tell you that there has been a previous problem with its use.
You should also look for rust or milky paint-like coating on the inside of the vehicle's gas tank, especially with motorbikes. Rust or sediments can clog carburetors and the milky white paint indicates that rust was previously removed from that part and repainted; this paint can sometimes clog the flow of fuel from the tank. Dark gas would also indicate old gas that will need changing.
Make some research on the models you pick
Each vehicle model or brand can have their own distinct imperfections. You must be aware of the flaws or common issues that are characteristic of the models of your choice. This way, you may be able to assess better and determine whether the current condition of the vehicle will only aggravate its flaws.
Try running the engine or machine without riding
Without riding the vehicle, run the engine to check for smooth operation and assess functions that can only be observed while the engine is running. The engine may crank loud as it starts, but make sure that there is no pulsing, screeching, or clanking while the engine is running. You must also turn on the lights to check if all of them are working properly including the turn signal and indicator lights. For motorbikes, you should try the clutches if they properly release when squeezed. The battery of the machine could be hard to test, but if the machine cranks a good noise when started, then the battery may be working well too. Check for leaks or emissions that are not normal as these can indicate holes, cracks or problems with the tubes and discharge conversion.
Try to ride the vehicle when the engine works good
Once you are able to determine that the engine is running smoothly without problems in a stationary position, you can check its performance during mobility by driving it or letting a friend try it for you. You should feel comfortable during the ride and the engine should be stable and smooth while on the go.
Check the paper works
Second hand vehicles can still have warranties. The dealer should provide some warranty for the vehicle, and additionally, the original warranty from the original owner could still exist if the model is not that old. Inspect the item's papers such as registration number, tax disc details, make and model of the vehicle.
