The Basic Rules of Tennis Explained
The amount of equipment involved in Tennis can deem it a fairly basic sport. Although the physical and mental challenges are endless, the initial investment in getting started are pretty basic. Because of this, virtually anyone can enjoy the game, regardless of your age, shape, size, or condition. The trick is learning how to play tennis and getting started. In terms of how the game is actually played, there are some basic guidelines that will allow you to play successfully without feeling overwhelmed by rules and regulations . Even if you are not interested in playing but merely watching, having an idea about what is going on will give you a much better understanding of the overall game.
The first thing to know is that tennis involves playing with at least 2 people, sometimes 4 if you are playing doubles. The equipment that is used is a tennis ball, tennis racquet and a tennis court. For each individual player there are also tennis shoes (which are highly recommended that they be tennis specific to prevent injury). Otherwise, there is no other equipment needed. This makes it a sport that is fairly light to play, unlike football, which has a large amount of heavy equipment that is involved as well.
The tennis court that is used must be a regulation court with universal dimensions. This ensures that the overall size and maintenance are all the same so that games are consistent no matter where you play in the world. The net goes in the center of the court and on each side there is a service line that runs parallel to the net. It is called the service line because it is the boundary line to which the serves must be hit within. The furthest lie that parallels teethe net is called the baseline. This is typically where players start playing and line up to hit their serve..
Along the side of the court are lines that mark the outer edges, and these edges are called the "alleys" or "doubles alleys". It is also important to understand the difference between singles and doubles before talking about the doubles alleys. In singles tennis the alley is out of bounds and when a ball hits the alley it is immediately out. However, in doubles the alley is allowed to be used without a penalty and is a useful part of the court to be played. This as you can imagine can cause a much different result in a doubles then in singles. In fact, once you start playing consistently, you will find that doubles and singles are very much two different sports. Although the same physical movements and scoring are mostly the same, the tempo and strategies associated with doubles are much different than that of singles. It is often said that singles gives you more of a workout, because there is only one person covering the space of the court as opposed to doles where both players of a team are covering the space of a court. Both singles and doubles both provide fun and healthy activity, and are highly recommended once you become familiar with playing tennis.
In short, the basic strategy of the game is to make more shots within the boundaries lines than your opponent. Advanced play is closely resembled to keep away. To serve the ball successfully you would be required to serve the ball into the other player's side of the court and hit within the service box on their side. The service boxes are a pair of squares that are closely placed in front of the net. There are service boxed on each side and regardless of which player is serving the box must be hit during the initial serve to start the point. The ball must bounce in the service box at least once in order for the serve to be considered good. Otherwise the serve must be repeated.
Once the ball has successfully hit the service box, the ball is to be hit back and forth across the tennis court until a player fails to hit the ball back across, or it hits outside of the boundaries or in the net. In order to score points you must not hit the ball into the alley and you must always hit the ball when it comes to you. If you fail to hit the ball back over the net then your opponent wins the point and the server will start another point.
Both Players take turns serving out entire games. A game is usually the first to 4 points (but you have to win by two points). Many people get confused when trying to learn the game because of the scoring system. Basically, 1,2,3,4 is instead called 15,30,40,game. In the event that a game is tied at 40-40 or "40 all", the server will often call out "deuce". Because you have to wi the game by two points, whoever wins the point after deuce will have the "ad or advantage". For example, if the server called deuce and then loses the following point, they would then call the following score "ad out" or "your ad". Reversely, if the server wins the deuce point the following score would be known as "ad in" or "my ad". Once a player win a game by two points, then the other player serves the next game. This allows both players to serve equally throughout a set which is typically the first one to 6 games. Most matches will play 2 out of 3 sets to decide a winner, and ion the professional level it is common to play 3-5 sets to determine the victor.
This is of course the condensed version, which does not take into account specific scoring or even specific scoring strategies, but it gives you a good basic foundation of how to get started playing tennis and how to start having fun with tennis.
