Everyone knows that memory cards are portable accessories for laptops, cameras and other devices. Without these portable cards, it will be frustrating for any gadget user to expand the memory storage of his device. One of these portable cards is the SD card (Secured Digital card). While their miniature counterparts (the microSD) provide storage for phones, the SD provides external storage for laptops and digital cameras.
However, there is some history and other information to this accessory, as the following sections explain everything about it:
The History of the SD card
The SD or the Secured Digital format initially appeared in August 1999. Toshiba, Sandisk, and Matsushita are the three companies who agreed to market the SD card as an improvement of the MultiMedia Cards or the MMC. This enhanced memory card was created as a competing product to Sony's Memory Stick, which was released to the market in the year 1998.
The SD format made its appearance in the 2000 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and early samples of the memory cards were available in the first quarter of the same year. Three months later, the first mass-produced SD memory cards were released to the market with 32 and 64 MB of storage.
The History of the SD Association
The SD Association (SDA) took care of maintaining the Secured Digital (SD) standard format. Sandisk, Toshiba, and Matsushita formed the association during the CES trade show in the year 2000. At that time, the SDA aimed to market and promote the SD cards. The association even set up its own headquarters in San Ramon, California - 30 manufacturers banded together to make quality memory cards.
The Features of the SD Card
In an attempt to prevent content piracy, these memory cards come with a write-protect notch feature. This feature can be activated by a sliding tab found on the front-left side of the card. Switching the tab to a notch allows the SD card to be read-only when inserted to any device.
Another feature of this memory card is security, as manufacturers can have their cards protected from modification or erasure, and prevent unauthorized users from copying or transferring the card's data and files. To increase the security, a user can choose to lock a memory card using a password feature. A locked card requires a user to encode the password before accessing the contents, and it can prompt the user to erase the files in case he/she forgets the password.
The Devices that Support the SD card
Currently, there are two main devices that fully-support the memory card as external storage. The first of the two is the digital camera, as most camera manufacturers such as Nikon, Canon and Kodak have an SD slot for accepting all types of cards under the SD format. Although digital cameras are beginning to switch to microSD formats, these devices still rely on the SD.
On the other hand, the personal computers accept the SD format. Almost all laptops have a designated slot to read SD cards, which allows a computer user to access files such as photos and documents. In addition, computer manufacturers even embed SD cards as an internal storage of a computer.
