During the beginning of the 21st century, there were no such things as microSD cards; electronic gadgets came to the market with only internal storage. With that, gadget users had to settle for devices with storage space of as little as 100 MB. For example, MP3 players arrived in the market with internal storage ranging from 128 MB to 1 GB. On the other hand, cellphones with internal storage of 100 MB or even less went on sale. There were devices that offered more storage, but they were very expensive mainly because of their storage capacity.
Today, microSD cards have become a vital accessory for all gadget users. MicroSD cards now come in different storage capacities, ranging from an entry-level 2 gigabytes to an astounding 1 terrabyte. Almost all electronic gadgets and peripherals come with microSD-card slots, and users can simply exchange memory cards from those slots.
Just how did the microSD cards enter the market and become the indispensable accessory that it is today? Here is the information on the history of the microSD format:
The History of the MicroSD
Prior to the debut, Sandisk created the microSD format under the name of T-Flash. It was then renamed to TransFlash, then to the current name when the SD Card Association (SDA) started to use it. The microSD memory card eventually made its debut appearance in March 14, 2005 during the CTIA Wireless 2005.
The first microSD cards were finally sold commercially on July 13, 2005. During that year, these memory cards were offered at low storage capacities of 32, 64 and 128 megabytes - at that time, 128 megabytes can store around 30 songs for an mp3 player. Then on July 2006, Sandisk released the first microSD card that offered 2 gigabytes (GB), but it came at a high price of $99. In three years' time, the same 2gb microSD can be bought for only $12, as memory cards become cheaper.
Throughout the years, memory cards got cheaper: from $12 for a 2gb microSD, it went down to $6 by the year 2009. Bigger-storage cards entered the market, with a 16gb memory card priced at $40 and a 4gb memory card priced at $8 in the year 2010. In the year 2014, there are 8gb to 128gb microSD cards with market prices ranging from $29.99 to 199.99. In February of the same year, Sandisk introduced the newest format called the MicroSDXC which allegedly improves transfer rates of files between devices.
Information on MicroSD
The "SD" abbreviation stands for "Secured Digital", and the microSD format is the miniature version of the SD card. Both SD and microSD formats are removable flash memory cards, which are handy for carrying around and transferring content from one device to another.
While the SD card is preferred as external storage for digital cameras and laptop computers, the microSD card is the choice for those who need extra phone storage. This is obviously due to its small size. The MicroSD format is also popular in most touch-screen tablets, although there are some tablets that can accept SD cards. To add access to computers with SD-card slots, manufacturers begin to package microSD cards with SD-card adapters - blurring the line between microSD and SD formats in the process.
