Do you ever run into a snag trying a new recipe or putting together a new contraption with instructions? I run into this problem with instructions with listed steps a lot. It's not that I can't follow a list of instructions but maybe those instructions don't give tips on avoiding mishaps during the process that can occur. I am a highly visual person so when this happens I Google imagery for how to do something or find a homemade Youtube video showing whatever I'm trying to do. I usually find more effective or efficient ways to do things by using diagrams or videos I come across from my own research.
1. YOUTUBE
Let's say for instance you want to change the firing pin in your Glock 17 9mm pistol. For starters, when you order a part like that online, the company assumes you're a gunsmith guru that does this for a hobby and you don't need instructions. If you treasure the use of your Glock pistol you sure don't want to mess it up. This is where searching YouTube becomes an invaluable asset. There are not only videos of how to replace to firing pin, but reviews and comments on the videos alert you to how effective the person teaching the video is. Moreover, if you perform a Youtube video on the issue you think you are having, you may save time and money because a good subject matter expert will explain what the causes are of your issue. For instance, in my pistol scenario it could have been just a spring that needed replacing.
2. GOOGLE IMAGE
If you are a visual person like me, using Google image search is your best bet for finding diagrams and step-by-step infographics for whatever new new thing you are trying. Again with the Glock scenario, I found a diagram of all the parts laid out and labeled. This diagram came in handy when doing a full cleaning so I made sure I had every piece when putting my Glock back together. I love the infographics that create a flowchart approach to help you determine what step to take next.
If you're the least bit creative or would like to try your own hand at creating your own infographic visit piktochart.com or canva.com to see what you can come up with. Placing a list of steps in a cool infographic is great way to help you kinetically retain the information and have a neat visual to use next time you need it.
