This article is based on a book called "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz and Janet Mills
There are four agreements that are fundamentally powerful and, if adopted and honored, can and will make life more pleasant and fulfilling. These four agreements are:
1. Always keep you word
2. Don't take anything personal
3. Don't make assumptions
4. Always do your best
Let's dissect each agreement starting with number 1. The first of the four agreements is always keep your word. Words are magic! They have the power to create or destroy. Sometimes we can say the slightest seemingly innocent thing to someone and it will have resounding and deep impact for years to come.
There are many important instances of using words that have a negative impact on ourselves and our own self-worth. For example, we frequently say I can't do something. But the word "can't" means impossible and that usually isn't what we mean. We might mean, "I don't know how", "I don't feel like it" or "I don't want to do it", but we rarely mean "can't"
When we say "can't" our subconscious mind hears that and shuts down. The subconscious hears everything we say and when we say "can't" our mind says, "OK Game over, can't do it. Finished"
The language we use is critical and using negative words can have a profound impact on us.
The second of the four agreements is, "Don't take anything personally. Many of us are in network marketing for example and one of the perceptions is we are rejected frequently. But when people say "no" it isn't personal. They are rejecting the business opportunity, not us.
"No" frequently means, "not now" or "I'm too busy to think about it" or I am embarrassed to present this to my spouse" or "I don't understand and am too timid to admit that". But "no" is rarely, if ever personal, so keep your chin up, forge ahead and go for no.
The third of the four agreements is don't assume anything. When we lack information, we tend to fill in the blank spaces with our imagination. So for example, I pass a friend walking down the street and greet him and he brushes me off sort of ignoring me and I go away thinking, "Wow, he must be really upset with me about something" Later I find our his mother passed that days and he was on his way to the funeral home to make arrangements.
We tend to frequently think that people are upset with us, don't like us or have a negative bias toward us when in fact they are not thinking about us at all. So it is best to always check and see if our assumptions are warranted. Get the facts and stay away from the fiction.
The last of the four agreements is "Always do you best". We have all heard it said that if it is worth doing, it is worth doing right so, "Do it right". But permit mistakes because that is how we learn. Forgive yourself when you screw up and move on. Life is too short for anything else.
