Several thousands of birth injuries occur every day. Though a number of birth injuries spontaneously resolve in time, a lot of them lead to permanent damage not only to the involved body part, but also to the child's life. Most of these permanent injuries involve the arms, the face and the trunk of the newborn, which may cause some forms of impairments as he or she grows up.
Some birth injuries are not readily observed; hence, it is important to be keen in recognizing them. Early recognition and initiation of treatment creates a big impact on the functioning of the individual.
Here are some of the most common birth injuries:
Brachial Plexus Injury
The brachial plexus is a group of nerves originating from the cervical and thoracic levels of the spinal cord. Brachial plexus gives off branches that are important in the functioning of the arms and the hands, such as the ulnar, the median and the radial nerves. Mild injury can manifest as numbness while severe injury can manifest as paralysis.
Injury to the brachial plexus most commonly occurs after assisted or forceps delivery, especially so when the instruments have been incorrectly applied. Brachial plexus injury is also possible when there is difficult delivery, such as in the case of shoulder presentation.
Facial Paralysis
Just like brachial plexus injury, facial paralysis is most frequently a complication of trauma during childbirth. Facial paralysis is precipitated by damage to the facial nerve, the nerve that is responsible for the movement of the muscles of facial expression. Damage to the facial nerve can lead to a condition called Bell's palsy characterized by facial asymmetry.
Most cases of facial paralysis resolve spontaneously, but if permanent, it may be a cause of eating difficulties. Forceps delivery is the most common cause of facial paralysis. When the forceps are asymmetrically applied, the facial nerve on one side of the face may be compressed leading to facial paralysis.
Fractured Clavicle
This condition most commonly occurs when the baby is too large to deliver naturally, leading to a difficult delivery. This is usually recognized when the mother notes that the baby is not moving his or her injured arm or when he or she cries when carried. This is called cephalopelvic disproportion and may be caused by two things. First, the mother's hip is too small or too narrow that the baby cannot completely descend to the birth canal.
Second, the baby is too large that he or she cannot fit into the mother's pelvis. Cephalopelvic disproportion may not be recognized until the time has come for the delivery of the shoulder. Performance of maneuvers to deliver the shoulder may lead to fractured clavicles.
Cerebral Palsy
Probably one of the most devastating birth injuries that can happen is cerebral palsy. This condition is characterized by impairment of motor functions, manifesting as muscle weakness or a delay in motor skills. Cerebral palsy occurs when there is damage to the brain of the child during delivery. Difficult and operative vaginal delivery can contribute to the occurrence of cerebral palsy.
