Apple Watch Review

Article Category: Computers and Technology

Author Name: Van Oakes

The Apple Watch, as it's officially known (not the iWatch, QUIT CALLING IT THAT), has been unveiled.

After months of hinting at the release, Apple has finally taken the plunge and is looking to lead the battle for your wrist with its own smartwatch. As anticipated, with a brand new bit of stylish Apple tech, the Apple Watch has met diverse opinions. Some have dubbed it the best thing ever, while some have called it "Just another smartwatch."

Quality is what you expect from Apple: light yet strong and sleek. The Apple Watch isn't nearly as slim as the iPhone 6, and it's flat, so it's not radically different from the other smartwatches out there. However, Apple has been careful to keep it from looking bulky and even the larger version doesn't look out of place on a petite female wrist.

The watch face itself comes in two sizes: 42mm high and 38mm (that's about 1.5in and 1.6in respectively). The Apple Watch's sapphire or Ion-X glass face (depending on which model you opt for) lies in a case made from the following materials, depending on which of the three models you choose (Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, or Apple Watch Edition). These finishes include: stainless steel, silver aluminum, 18-karat yellow gold, space black stainless steel, space gray aluminum and 18-karat rose gold.

The dial – sorry, Digital Crown – looks less obtrusive in real life than it does in Apple's promo shots. It's smaller than the dials on most men's watches, but it's also super easy to access. Apple Watch's digital crown feels light, with minimal resistance and no click. It's a well-designed piece, allowing you to move things on the screen without covering them with your clumsy fingers.

This does not mean that the watch face isn't touch sensitive; you can tap and swipe the Apple Watch face. In fact, the Apple Watch is able to determine just how much force you've touched the screen with. It can distinguish between a regular tap, used to select things, and a harder press, used to access contextual menus. Apple refers to this technology as "Force Touch". It is made possible by tiny electrodes that are embedded in the display. You can swipe the screen to access summaries of your location, the weather, and your calendar, for example. Apple calls these mini apps Glances. They show you only the most relevant information from apps in a format that is suitable for the Watch's screen.

FUNCTOINALITLY

Though designed as a companion to the iPhone, the Apple Watch will reportedly have a limited number of offline capabilities, including the ability to make Apple Pay payments, play music over Bluetooth, track activity, and display some apps. The Apple Watch has a built-in speaker and a microphone and is able to place and receive phone calls. While it is water resistant and able to withstand sweat, rain, and hand washing, it should not be worn while swimming, bathing, or showering.

The Apple Watch was also designed to function as a health and fitness device, offering movement tracking capabilities combined with intuitive apps that encourage users to be more active. Apple custom-designed a special S1 processor chip for the Apple Watch, which integrates several different subsystems into a single module. It houses a gyroscope and an accelerometer to measure activity, and a sensor that detects heart rate. The heart rate sensor consists of four, count them four, sapphire lenses built into the zirconia backing of the watch that detect pulse rate (via infrared, visible-light LEDs, and photodiodes). The watch also integrates the GPS and Wi-Fi capabilities of the iPhone into several of its tracking abilities, using the phone's GPS system to determine distance traveled.

SCREEN

The screen is bright and crisp, and when looked at from the kind of glancing angles you'd expect to look at the watch from, like on an angle while riding a bike or balancing in a crowded train, the words and pictures remained nicely readable without much glare.

SIRI

The other way you can communicate with the Apple Watch is via Siri. Just raise your wrist and say "Hey, Siri", or press and hold the Digital Crown and you can dictate messages or request turn-by-turn directions.

TAPTIC FEEDBACK

Guess what? You aren't the only one doing the tapping when it comes to the Apple Watch. The watch incorporates what Apple is calling a "Taptic Engine". This enables it to 'tap' your wrist to alert you to notifications, such as messages from friends, or to tell you to turn left or right if you are following directions; yup you read that correctly, there are different kinds of taps depending on whether you should turn right or left. Our colleague experiences this taptic feedback while trying out an Apple Watch after the event on Tuesday. He said: "It's a pretty gentle prod – certainly nothing that's going to make you jump out of your skin the first time someone tries to message you."

It's similar to the vibrate function on an iPhone, except that only you know that you are being nudged. Let's face it: when your phone vibrates everyone knows when you get a call, even if you have the sound off. The taptics in the Apple Watch have that sort of nuanced feel, with the heartbeat delivered as a softly detailed pulse.

APPLE PAY

Below the Digital Crown is another button which takes you to the home screen and to the Friends app, from which you contact your friends. This button is also used when you are paying for things using Apple Pay.All you do is double-click the button and hold up your watch to a payment reader. This is made possible because the Apple Watch includes an NFC chip (as rumored). But that's not all: there is also a dedicated "Secure Element" chip that stores encrypted information about your credit and debit cards. It doesn't store your actual credit card number, but rather a "device account number" that is used to create a single-use security code to authorize each transaction. For added security, if you take the Apple Watch off, it'll lock and require a code before you can purchase anything. Apparently the watch's rear sensor can tell if the watch is being worn and you need to enter a PIN when you put it on before you can use it. Thieves who don't know your code won't be able to use the watch. Brilliant!

BATTERY LIFE AND CHARGING

The battery life is suspected to be a key issue for Apple's much-anticipated watch, and new claims reveal it will last for 19 hours on a single charge. Tech blog 9to5mac also claims that with constant use, the battery will die after just four hours. However, the tech giant is believed to still be working on the software in a bid to improve battery life before its expected ship date in March.

In the events leading up to the Apple event, reports had suggested that one thing the Apple Watch would suffer from is poor battery life. People don't expect to charge their watch every night, so it may disappoint people if this is necessary. Apple has not made any official comments regarding battery life, and to be honest that's not really surprising given that the Apple Watch is really a work in progress, obviously.

Apple does seem to be suggesting that you will need to charge it every day, however. During the presentation Apple said it had designed the device for "easy nightly charging" with the magnetic charger.

We like the look of the magnetic charging attachment. It's similar to the MagSafe plug used on Macbooks in that it snaps into place on the back of the watch. There are no exposed charging contacts so the charge is delivered via induction. That had led some to think that this is wireless charging, but it's not true wireless charging.

WHEN CAN ONE AQUIRE THIS SIDEKICK?

Apple's being cagey about when, exactly, you'll be able to slip an Apple Watch onto your wrist; they are merely saying that the Watch will be available in early 2015. Prices will start at US$350 and it'll be available in three different variants: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition. There are also a collection of straps to choose from including Link Bracelet, Sport Band, Leather Loop, Classic Buckle, Modern Buckle, and Milanese Loop. The Leather Loop and Sport Band options are offered in multiple color choices. The Sport Band comes in black, white, pink, blue, and lime green

VERDICT

So, is the Apple Watch a revolutionary piece of hardware? Yes and no. No because it's not a completely different kind of smartwatch, but as with all things Apple, the hardware – even if it's nicer than anyone else's – is only half the story. As with the iPhone, the Apple Watch has a massive advantage in the apps department, something that was obvious from its unveiling: where Google tends to talk about the amazing potential of Android Wear, Apple talks about big brands that are already signed up and making apps for its platform. These include apps that allow you to find your car, let you into your hotel room, control your smart heating or track and share your exercise, not to mention shopping with Apple Pay. For that reason, the Apple Watch may be the device that brings the smartwatch to the masses and gets the wearable revolution revolving. It is a device that people with a bit of fashion sense would want to wear, and it looks like something that mainstream people might actually wear. The Apple Watch may well be the smartwatch that converts the masses to the benefits of wearable technology. We can't wait to get our hands on one.
