When it comes to kitchen matters, safety is always the first consideration. From the largest to the minutest detail, one must always remember to keep oneself safe from accidents. One of the simplest and probably the most common kitchen safety precautions is the use of pot holders. Though they are solely used for handling hot objects, their value cannot be undermined. Pot holders equate to convenience. By letting you hold and transfer hot pans, spoons and other kitchen utensils, these allow you to move freely around the kitchen, to do what you must, and to cut down your cooking time. Imagine if you do not have a pot holder in hand and you have to wait for the pan to cool down before you can grab it.
There are various types of pot holders that you can buy in the market. They can be of various shapes, colors, and sizes and they are also made of different materials. Some pot holders are made up of cloth, the most common of which is terry cloth which is excellent in absorbing water and is made of 100% cotton. The newer ones, on the other hand, are made of silicone. How do you know which ones to choose if you are faced with various forms of these kitchen tools?
As mentioned above, the first thing that you have to consider is safety. How do you know which ones are safe and which ones are not? It depends upon the materials used in making the holder, the size and the style. There are pot holders that you can wear like gloves, which have been found out to be safer and more comfortable. The newer holders make use of silicone materials instead of the usual terry cloth.
These silicone-made pot holders are said to be more advantageous than those made up of cloth as they are water-proof, heat- resistant and are easier to clean. You do not have to fear being splattered with boiling water or cooking oil. Unlike terry cloth holders, you do not have to bother with washing them because all you have to do is to put the soiled part under running water and the stain will easily come off! If you are worried about comfort, then you would be surprised to find out that silicone holders are versatile. They can fit almost any hand. They also have better grip so you do not need to be worried about dropping your hot bowl of soup.
The size of the pot holder is important as well. If you prefer to buy those rectangular- or square-shaped pot holders, then you must choose those that are at least 8x8 inches. Using appropriately-sized holders allow you to get a better grasp of your utensils while lessening your risk of touching hot surfaces. But what is most important when choosing your pot holder is comfort, especially if you prefer to use the glove-styled ones. Make sure that the holder is neither too large nor too small. Your palms and fingers must perfectly fit into the glove and must be able to move without difficulty. This allows you to maintain a good grip.
