The feeling of emptiness that parents feel when their children, especially the last one, leave home is referred to as empty nest syndrome. Although this is applicable to both parents, this is a more prevalent condition among women/mothers.
In comparison with other forms of grief as when when loved ones passed away, empty nest syndrome is more difficult since it is often left unnoticed and unrecognized. The reason is the widely accepted perception that adult children leaving their parents to live their own lives is an ordinary and even preferable action. Parents seldom find sympathy and consolation from relatives and friends. Unfortunately, it is even worsened by its accompanying difficulties and other emotional instabilities.
Loss of Parenting Role
Parents, particularly mothers, may have dedicated almost all their lives to fostering their children. They see this as their primary purpose and goal in life. So when their children don t need this kind of attention and caring anymore, mothers tend to feel empty and they feel like they lost their purpose in life. Many psychologists say that normally takes one and a half years before women could cope with the transition of being a mother to an independent woman again.
New Routines
Aside from the basic remorse that empty nest syndrome brings, parents may also feel burdened by other conditions such as building new relationships and bonds. Adult children, especially those who have built families of their own, would not like their parents to still do what they are accustomed to doing.
Parents also find it hard to adapt to the situation of being a couple again. Of course, staying alone together after years of sharing the house with their children for a long time will make a huge difference in their daily routines and in the way they act.
Empty nest syndrome can be viewed as a normal situation, but it does not change the fact that parents who suffer from this undergo a lot of stress and depression. So it is important for them to learn some basic tips on how to cope with this syndrome.
The first step that parents should do is to acknowledge and welcome the empty nest syndrome. This could help them accept the changes faster so that instead of grieving, they can support their children to whatever their goals are.
Do not rush on things. It is normal to feel the loss and grief for a considerable period of time. Temporarily, they can divert their attention to other things while waiting for their full-recovery and adaptation to their new role, situation and environment.
Talk to their partner and discuss what they both feel and their plans together. Constant communication will help alleviate the feeling of being alone and sadness. They can also seek for a professional help if they feel the difficulty and pressure of handling it together.
Empty nest syndrome may be full of grief and loneliness, but many see this as an opportunity for positive changes like: parents will be able to give themselves more quality time together, they can think for their own well-being instead of focusing on their children, and they can do things which their responsibilities as parents restricted them from doing before.
