Educational technology is a multi-faceted and broad concept which has been the popular topic of interests among educators as early as 1978. Ironically, despite its growing popularity, its structure and basic foundations have not yet been clearly defined. Unfortunately, inconsistencies among experts in the field made the establishment of just one working definition even more impossible. Nonetheless, it is still important to clarify its general concept.
Educational technology system involves preparing and helping an individual understand different learning resources. Its focus is devising processes which can facilitate learning and evaluate the impact of technology to learners, businesses, and organizations alike. It also includes processes of analyzing and arriving at solutions to problems which are not just about education alone, but including even social and scientific problems through research, theorization, and evaluation.
The word technology is defined in standard dictionaries as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. However, technology, as far as the principle of educational technology is concerned, is not only limited to its conventional implication. In its most basic and widely construed meaning, it is not only the integration and utilization of technological devices and features into the teaching and learning process, but the exhaustion of all available resources (manual and electronic) to address the different problems in the learning pedagogy. Educational technology offers timely opportunities to address various concerns and to widen the scale of education, research and reform systems in a vast and more accessible milieu of many digital platforms.
The growing misconception of the idea of educational technology may be accounted to the continuous evolution of the world of technology itself. Logically, new technological advancements would affect the educational system in the sense that, new discoveries may be viable solutions to some educational concerns thereby contributing to the developments and changes in the field of education while some result may be otherwise. Instead to facilitate learning, they may give additional complications and more complex situations to educational system.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that both are within the sphere of what we mean by educational technology so the dynamic aspects of these various concerns need to be understood instead of being disregarded. With diverse problems, so as diverse solutions ranging from catering the learners different learning styles, providing resources in the classroom, designing appropriate program and its implementing patterns and delivering distant education to using advanced technologies to facilitate communication and further developments. All these, when taken into their holistic sense, constitute the idea of educational technology.
According to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (2006), the key phrases in ET are appropriate technology, that is, appropriate to the task at hand to meet the specific objectives, and the reorganization of the resources into an integrated and workable system. That being said, frequent evaluation both in formative and summative forms are essential parts of educational technology. And to properly apply this discipline, it is a must that the chosen media complements with the instructional design that is readily accessible and usable. This goes without saying that technology , in the field of education at least, may not just be everything about tools and advancements.
