Most parents want the best for their children. That much is generally okayed upon. How to accomplish that is where the debate begins. If you could do just one thing different to help your children out the most, what would it be?
That is the question I attempted to answer recently when I began my research. I wanted to know one simple thing that a parent could do with a young child that could positively impact that child's life. I was looking for something that didn't cost a lot of money that would be available to every parent in spite of their means or geographic location.
What I found was something so simple, I was surprised I didn't come up with it myself. What is it? It is reading aloud to your child. I know that sounds pretty basic, but it holds true. Reading out loud can have a dramatic influence on your child.
When a children are read to, they are a lot more likely to become a reader themselves. Parents who start reading to their children at a young age are sending the message that reading is good and reading is fun. This can stimulate a child's interest in reading and opens the doors to a lifetime of reading enjoyment.
One of the more interesting pieces of information I came across in my research was from Dr. Andrea Pastorok. Dr. Pastorok is an educational psychologist for Kumon Math and Reading Centers. Kumon is the world's largest after-school math and reading program. Kumon's reading programs have helped many children of all ages and levels become better self-learners.
Dr Pastorok claims that reading out loud stimulates the brain and serves as a foundation for literacy development. As I read further into this fascinating subject, I also learned that the more children read the better they become at doing it. In addition, those students who read the most are the likeliest to stay in school and accomplish academic achievements.
What this tells me is that it all begins with us, parents reading to our kids at the earliest time possible. Read early, read often, and read aloud. This simple exercise get the ball rolling and sets the stage for our children to become avid readers and can help them accomplish great things as students.
So how early should you start reading to your child? I would suggest as early as when they are in the womb. Reading to an unborn child may seem a little unusual, but what a great way to get into the habit and start bonding with your precious little one.
Reading to your infant is something that can help the child develop an early sense of language patterns as well as a sense for rhythm. This can also help teach the art of listening. It is believed that the ability to listen is something that is acquired and should be taught and cultivated gradually. One good tip is to read slow enough that your child can begin to develop mental pictures of what you are reading about.
Reading out loud to your children can also help to develop their imaginations as well as their creativity. You should show them the pictures in the book too. Encourage your kids to appreciate the art of the illustrations.
Should you need to stop reading before the end of a book or perhaps a chapter, you should carefully select the stopping point. A good point to take a break is a suspenseful one. You want the child to anticipate what will happen next and get them looking forward to the next reading session. A quick recap of what you read in the previous session is a great way to start the next one.
When I read to my children, I always emphasized to use lots of expression as I narrated the story. I would change the tone in my voice to fit the characters and their expressions. For example, if there is a bully or a monster in the story who speaks, I would deepen my voice and really exaggerate my tone so as to emphasize the character's personality. My children always responded excitedly each time I did that. I wanted to engage them as much as possible into the story line.
When the child is very young, you will really want to avoid long passages that are descriptive, at least until the child's imagination is ready for it. Reading a good children's book to a child is a wonderful thing as long as it is age appropriate. You want the story to match up with the child's vocabulary and attention span.
If you have a hyper child or one that is often active, you may find it a little more difficult to capture and keep their attention. If that is the case, let them have some paper and pencils and even some crayons. This will give their hands something to do while they hear the story you are reading out loud to them.
While you are reading, encourage the child to interact with you and the story being read. It is perfectly fine to occasionally stop reading and have a conversation about the characters and the story line. Be sure to patiently answer their questions. Answering questions is a great way to foster a child's curiosity and keep them listening.
It is strongly recommended to allocate a time every day for these out loud reading sessions. Once the child is old enough, also set aside time for them to read on their own. Having your own book to read while the child is reading is a great way to lead by example, spend quality time together, and to encourage your child to become a passionate reader.
If you are looking for a new children's book to read to your child, take a look at my books called Sparky the Dragon Learns Life Lessons. I wrote these books to teach an important lesson but also to keep preschoolers listening, laughing, and learning.
One of the most important things you should do for your children is to read out loud to them starting at an early age. The benefits of reading aloud to children are quite powerful. Remember to read to them early and often, and you will likely see it pay off for years to come.
