As one ages, the levels of Vitamin C in the skin may decrease. As a result, collagen production also decreases. This leads to signs of aging such as wrinkle formation and dry, dull-looking skin. The use of Vitamin C serum can restore the skin's health, integrity and youthfulness.
This serum can be very expensive. In addition, vitamin C loses its potency once you add it to creams, lotions or serums. The longer it sits in the shelf, the less potent it becomes. That would mean paying for something that gives fewer benefits.
Some people choose to make their own serum. This way, they can control the concentrations of the vitamin. They are also more aware of the potency, based on the length of time that has passed from the day they made their serum.
Tips in Making DIY Vitamin C Serum
It is important to understand the uses of each ingredient before making homemade serum. Vitamin C is available in different forms, such as SAP (sodium ascorbyl phosphate), MAP (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) and LAA (L-ascorbic acid). In serums, LAA is useful because this is the purest form and most effective for skin health and anti-aging.
A base is also important in creating the serum. This can be distilled water. However, pure distilled water and LAA is very thin and difficult to spread. Most serums use a combination of distilled water and glycerin as base. The function of glycerin is to thicken the mixture. It also provides some moisturizing effect on skin. Therefore, basically, a homemade vitamin C serum is composed of LAA, water and glycerin. Some people choose to add more licorice root for added skin benefits.
How to make the serum
When mixing the ingredients, it is important to do so in the right sequence. Mix water and LAA first. Make sure that the ascorbic acid completely dissolves before adding glycerin. Otherwise, there will be LAA clumps in the vitamin C serum.
Vitamin C should be 10|, at least. Collagen production is stimulated in this concentration. The optimum concentration is at 20|. Beyond 20|, negative effects are likely to develop. However, vitamin C can be irritating to the skin. Give the skin time to adapt to the serum. Start with 5|concentration daily for 2 weeks before using 10|for another 2 weeks and eventually to the optimum 20|concentration. Slowly increase the vitamin C serum concentrations. Do not jump from 5|to 20|.
The percentages mean the following:
5|vitamin C concentration means 5|LAA added to 95|base (glycerin/water mixture)
For example, mix 1/2 teaspoon of LAA to 8 1/2 teaspoon of base (water or water-glycerin mixture)
- 10|concentration means 10|LAA combined with 90|base
- For example, mix 1 teaspoon of LAA to 8 teaspoons of base
- 20|concentration means 20|LAA mixed with 80|water/glycerin base.
- For example, mix 2 teaspoons of LAA to 7 teaspoons of base
For the ratio of water to glycerin, this depends on individual preferences. Some prefer no glycerin at all. The amount of glycerin affects how sticky the vitamin C serum will turn out. Adding glycerin can cause the serum to have a sticky texture. The more important consideration is the ratio of LAA to the base.
