I think everybody knows that the 1980's had some enjoyable movies, but here is my top 5 list of movie soundtracks from the 80's that were well...awesome. It definitely took me a bit to figure out which movies I wanted to go with, but these five movies not only have consistent soundtracks they are notable movies as well.
01 Planes, Trains, & Automobiles
First up on my list is none other than the Thanksgiving comedy featuring Neal Page (Steve Martin) and Del Griffith (John Candy). To go with this superb movie and all of its one-liners by both actors, this movie actually has a great soundtrack. Thats a damn rare thing these days! To steal a line from Del's vault.
Some of the highlights for this soundtrack are Mess Around (Ray Charles), Blue Moon of Kentucky (Bill Monroe), and Ba-Na-Na-Bam-Boo (Westworld).
It is a toss up on which songs I like the best for this movie, but one of the better parts of the movie is when they are featuring Blue Moon of Kentucky while driving in their burnt up car. Radio still works though. You can't write comedy any better then this.
02 Back To The Future
On to number two and my pick for the best movie that ever came out in the 80's and highest grossing movie of 1985. Back to the Future. This movie easily has some of the best one-liners of any movie that came out in the 80's. As you will see from the YouTube clip below, one of best lines in the whole movie.
As for the soundtrack, it is loaded with Huey Lewis & the News tracks. Power of Love and Back in Time are the cornerstone of the movie. Of course you can't forget that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) plays a rendition of Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode with the Starlighters.
03 The Breakfast Club
On to movie three and another cult favorite from the '80s. The first three movies I picked could of been in any order. It was really hard for me to choose the order of these three.
The Breakfast Club does indeed have a impressive set of songs for its soundtrack. Starting with Don't You Forget About Me (Simple Minds) at the end of the movie. Some of the other highlights from this movie include Fire In the Twilight (Wang Chung) and Sunshine of Your Love (Cream).
04 Blues Brothers
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it. As for my pick at number four, this movie probably has the best overall soundtrack. Everybody knows about all the wisecracks and nonstop witty comments that make this movie great.
Some of the highlights for this movie are Sweet Home Chicago, Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Gimme Some Lovin' among others.
05 Caddyshack
With all the great improv that went on during this movie, they also accampanied it with a fantastic soundtrack. You can't beat all the great actors that were in the movie and without them the movie would not have been great.
As for this final soundtrack, it includes the songs I'm Alright, Lead the Way (Kenny Loggins), & Anyway You Want It (Journey).
As you can see from this list, there were some formidable soundtracks to go with these excellent movies. I am sure there are a few others that could of made the top 5, but those are my picks for 1980's soundtracks that were well...awesome.
