Driveway maintenance is a significant aspect of home ownership. But unlike the interior space of the house, the driveway placed outside of the house walls, where elements from nature, people, and machines can drive force and destroy them all at once. For this, it is very important for people to know the process of applying driveway coating before anything gets worse. Without doing this, it will lead to more costs and more investments, just so to add value and appeal to the house. It would be best to use driveway coating these days, before the subfreezing temperatures would destroy the outside space of home.
Before applying driveway coating to the entire space, inspect the place first and make sure there are no trouble spots lurking, especially along the sides and parts where force is usually being applied. Check for cracks, oily stains, potholes, including the collapsing areas of the floor somewhere around the edges of the driveway. It is usually these areas that are more susceptible to damage, so be very alert when it comes to these areas. If in case there are grease stains and oil stains found in it, they can be extingished using hot water that has soap in it. With the use of a stiff bristle scrub brush, try scrubbing it using the hot water and the soap. It if cannot be dissolved, there are a number of products that may be useful, such as Oil Eater or Krud Kutter, which may both be helpful.
On the other hand, if there are cracks settling within the edges of the driveway, try mending them by filling them out with the use of pourable liquid squeeze bottles, preformed rolls, or caulking tubes, each of which would depend on the size of the crack. There are some liquid fillers that can fill out about one-quarter of an inch wide. For those that would take one quarter inch to one-half inch wide cracks, this would have to be repaired with the use of an asphalt-repair caulk or a roll-type filler. For those that are more than one-half inch wide, it would be better to use a stuff foam backer rod and stuff it into the crack, before applying the caulk or the roll-type filler. However, be mindful that before using any liquid filler, it is best to vacuum the space first with a wet or dry vacuum, just to make sure it is free from dirt, grass, stones, or other types of matter.
Others even use a slotted screwdriver to pick out the debris from the inside of the crack. However, if the cracks are too wide and had become potholes instead, these can be restored with the use of a blacktop patch or what is called cold patch , which are ready-to-use asphalt. After brushing the area clean and applying vacuum to clean the space from debris, take the cold patch asphalt and, using shovel, spread it to about 2 inches deep across the hole. Compact the area using a hand tamper, with a spare length of 4x4 or 2x4. Add more asphalt and compact the area again, until the hole is partly overfilled. Drive the car back and forth over the patch, to make it at par with the rest of the flooring. If the patch sinks, add more asphalt and repeat the process. Give it enough time to dry, or about 24 hours before sealing the surface with a driveway coating.
