In using decorative concrete coatings, the aim is not just to apply the concrete for construction but to enhance the aesthetics of the structure as well. This type of coating serves as an essential aspect of building a structure, and is used in walls, floors, driveways, as well as patios.
Before, it was just asphalt that is used in applying a coating. Nowadays, however, there are decorative concrete coatings that are being made available, to add art and beauty to the structure, as it is provided with a variety of colors, forms, shapes, and sizes, as well as elements that will make it more attractive. A variety of chemicals are used for creating decorative coatings, and they are usually being mixed during the pouring process or once the concrete is dried. For this, there are different types of decorative concrete coatings. Among these is the stamped concrete, the decorative overlays, the acid staining, polished concrete, vertical overlays, concrete countertops among others. Each of these follows a unique set of processes and materials used to create these coatings.
The method of applying decorative concrete coatings to a driveway follows a stage-by-stage process. Before anything else, the driveway should be made clean with the use of a broom to make sure that it is free from dust and debris. It is better to use a garden hose or a pressure washer to be able to rinse the surface more effectively. From the highest end of the driveway, go the way down to the lowest edge, and make sure all the dirt, sand, and grit are all wiped out. For the spots that are very dirty, it would be better to scrub clean the area with the use of a concentrated asphalt cleaner, such as Driveway Kleen or other parallel products. Before applying decorative concrete coatings, seal the driveway by using asphalt-driveway sealers. In this case, the weather remains to be vital, since there should be three days of dry, sunny weather, to make sure the concrete coatings would get dry entirely and properly. On a surface that is absolutely dry, extract the sealer and use a long-handled tool with flexible rubber squeegee on one end and the stiff bristle brush on the other end. Using the squeegee blade, spread the sealer around the edges of the bristle brush, so that it evens out and would be easier to apply. There are other sealers that come with a handy thick-nap paint roller. To apply the sealer, pour a ribbon of sealant right through the driveway, and then push and pull the sealant with the use of a squeegee, to make sure it covers about 3 feet wide by the entire width of driveway. Repeat the process by overlapping the previous section with the new one until all areas are being covered. Afterwards, get the bristle brush edge and use it in spreading out the excess sealant that are distributed usually in the lower spots of the driveway. Make sure the sealant is extended evenly in both the low and high spots of the driveway. For the first coating, allow up to 12 hours to dry. For the second coating, allow up to 24 hours to dry. Make sure these areas are being blocked, so that nothing or no one will exert pressure on these areas before it turns out dry.
