But in the end, all of these suffer from the basic boon of all frozen things -- they melt. Most of the time, the ice clocks out too fast for you to enjoy a drink that has not been spoiled by the resulting dilution from the melting.
However, along came sphere ice, which is just basically ice in a spherical form. This shape allows the ice to make the least possible contact with the drink, therefore preserving the flavor and providing a longer cooling time by not melting too fast. Sounds great? Yes, it is, especially considering the fact that a floating crystal whiskey ice ball is in itself enough to get everyone's attention anywhere you are at the bar!
The thing is that not many people have access to this form. Many people have tried buying all sorts of ice sphere molds in different places online, and in turns out that they are made of brittle and easily breakable materials, usually not lasting for very long. There are also those who find that it is not easy to make perfect spheres with these kinds of ice ball molds, since fill lines are not well-defined -- you cannot know for sure whether you have filled it up properly to the brim. Then again, there is the repeated problem of the balls being stuck, or being deformed upon extraction.
But there are also a different style made of food-grade silicone that can prevent all of the above-said problems fro occurring. Silicone is more durable than most products and can withstand both freezing temperatures and those as high as more than 400 degrees without breaking. Silicone ice sphere molds can be made to be partly transparent, and an easy-to-see fill-line can be used to gauge the contents. Its flexible properties can also help prevent problems in getting out your ice ball. Furthermore, this is nowhere near expensive!
