The problem with the ice

The wheel has been one of the greatest inventions of mankind -- it has greatly ushered forth the eras of development and enlightenment that has brought us the world of comfort and pleasure that we live in today. As history repeats itself in a micro-cosmic scale, it seems the invention of another round object is about to usher in another era of pleasure, when it comes to drinks and mixes -- the ice ball.

Let's face it -- everyone likes ice on their favorite drinks, whether it be a simple iced tea or an elaborate mix prepared by a bartender. And when it comes to preparing drinks, several varieties of ice have been made, usually only differing on the presentation and the color. There's the nearly opaque twice-frozen ice which, though lacking in aesthetics for some, end up melting slowly, keeping your drinks colder for longer. For presentations in cocktails, crushed or cracked ice is used. For those looking for crystal-clear ice, warm water is frozen into cubes, looking pretty for on-the-rocks drinks.

However, no matter which among these coolers one chooses, they are prone to the same issues (especially the crushed variety). Because of the way that a majority of their surface area is exposed to the room temperature of the drink, they tend to cool too fast and too much, if left unchecked. What's worse, they can even dilute the drink as they melt, ruining the flavor that was so well mixed by your bartender.

An ice ball, made with ice sphere molds, is a different matter altogether. It's spherical shape allows for minimal contact with the drink, making it last longer -- giving you constant temperature without diluting your drink, so you could enjoy it at your own measure. As a plus, a beautiful crystal globe bobbing in and out of your whiskey glass is a treat in itself. Who says form cannot meet function at a junction?

While the matter of making these ice balls seem to be simple -- just get a round mold, right? -- it may be tough to find a suitable item that can fit the bill, mainly because of the unique shape. As well, the ideal size would be around one size smaller than a tennis ball. Many of the products on sale in the market are made from easily breakable materials that cannot withstand years of use. Instead, one should be looking for a silicone-based material that will not allow the ice, to stick, and will not break even under the stress of extracting the ice spheres for drinks. There is also the question of having to make sure that the mold is adequately filled up to make sure that the ice will form in a perfect shape. Thankfully, there are products that are made of semi-transparent material equipped with a fill-line, allowing for easily refilling. The material should also be leak-proof, space saving, and dishwasher-safe, for a totally hassle-free maintenance! Then you are on your way to making drinks more wonderful than ever before! Black Russian, anyone?
