Author Name: Ice Sphere Tech ®
Ice is a must for drinks, and for those who know their Gin and Tonic, Jack and Coke, or Scotch, it is a very common complaint that after the body, you get to taste more water from the melting ice than the drink you actually made. It seems that the regular ice cube (or crushed, cracked, even twice-frozen ice) that you use at home are not the ideal ones for a drink.
Most shapes of ice are designed to cool the drink quickly, and therefore melt quickly, leaving your drink diluted. This is one of the main reasons why drinks prepared by a professional bartender at a club may seem "fresher" to the taste -- their ice and glasses are both specifically designed to complement each other, keeping the drink cold and preventing the ice from melting for a longer time.
At home, the closest that one could get to this technique is to use an "ice ball", a spherical piece of ice whose shape prevents it from actually making contact with the drink excessively, thereby prolonging its lifespan.
The art of creating ice spheres became quite prominent in Japan, where many people attribute its invention. The way they do it is to take a block of ice and carve a spherical portion about as large as a handball. This is, however, a skill that takes patience and considerable talent for the work, and would never have been practical in a modern commercial setting, let alone in your home! There is also a way to create several ice spheres at a time by using an aluminum mold, which uses heat and pressure to break up a larger piece of ice in a few minutes. This process can create many perfectly-shaped ice spheres at a time, but this would still not be economical because of the relative expense of the machine.
The good news is that there are certain molds that can be used to recreate this process using just your regular freezer. It might not be that easy to find the best one, though, because of the many new competitors. There are those that are essentially ice trays with spheres instead of cubes -- because of the relatively small size of the products, they do not offer the advantages of a real ice ball, as they melt just about as fast as a regular ice cube does. Then again, there are those items that are made of brittle materials, which makes it a pain to remove the ice ball afterwards without breaking the tray.
The perfect alternative would be a food-grade silicone ice sphere mold which is flexible enought o easily let go of the product without cracking or breaking. Such an item can take a few years' worth of job before showing any signs of strain. Such an item would also be dishwasher-safe, allowing for easy maintenance. It won't be expensive as well. Then, you can have an accessible way to add a touch of class to your drinks!
