Applying tints to car windows is a reliable technique of protecting the driver and its passengers. Window films can block a significant amount of UV rays; protecting people from its harmful effects. Additionally, it is proven to increase the sturdiness of windows as well as improve security and privacy.
However, it is important to be responsible by being aware of the existing laws and regulations when it comes to acquiring and installing window tint to cars.
This article will outline these laws so you know what to expect.
Visibility
It is prescribed that the window tint should not impede the driver's vision of the road. Thus, the tint must allow a clear view of the road despite conditions such as poor lighting, heavy rain, and so on. Furthermore, the tint must not impede the driver's eye contact with other drivers and pedestrians.
For enforcing these rules, a value known as the Visible Light Transmission or VLT is used. This measures the penetration of light through any window surface. A measure of 20% VLT means 20 percent of light can pass through a window surface.
With these requirements, the level of tinting is to be controlled specifically in particular parts of the car.
Visibility through the windscreen is a primary concern. First of all, the window tint should not cover the major part of your car's windshield - specifically the area affected by the wipers. This section should be clear of any window films used for tinting purposes.
However, partial coverage is allowed on top of the windscreen to reduce sunlight. This will prevent excessive light from disrupting the driver's view of the road. This is allowed as long as the previous condition is still met. Additionally, no more than 10% of the entire windscreen can be covered by the film.
The minimum required VLT for most vehicles is 35%. For passenger vehicles, a minimum of 20% is permitted for windows behind the vehicle's "B pillar". It is the middle pillar next to the front doors and usually at the center of four-door sedans. The use of a 'clear' film to improve the durability of windows is permitted as long as the prescribed VLT is fulfilled.
Finally, the window films to be used must not be reflective. This is to prevent other drivers from being distracted due to reflections from headlights and sunlight.
