Dirt bikes, also referred to as trail bikes or pit bikes, are those small motorcycles designed for racing and off-road recreation. Manufacturers begin making these dirt bikes when riding trends for off-road riding were beginning to become famous, and now, these bikes are being made in Europe, Japan and in the United States.

Brief History

Motocross, or dirt-bike racing, came from "scrambling" which is a famous event for trail-riding that started after World War I in Great Britain. What racers did is to create teams and join other teams in a circuit that had several stops. Soon, motocross had different categories based on the dirt bikes' engine size.

125cc: No Frills

Dirt bikes have different types of engine sizes, and the well-known 125cc dirt bikes have the potential to reach blazing speeds, this of course depends on the internal components of its engine.

They are not street-legal for the lack of equipment such as turn signals and headlights. They also have low ground clearance (the highest would be around 10 inches), and their gas tanks could probably hold around only a gallon of fuel.

A dirt bike like this is able to carry a rider to maximum speeds of 40 to 80mph. Speed is not an issue, though, as it would be light weight and easy handling that matters in the world of successful racing.

Gears

Gears help you stay in control of your 125cc dirt bikes. It doesn't only determine if you win or lose a game, but also whether you get injured or not.

First gear will get you off the line, however other professional riders start off with the second gear

Third and fourth are both turning gears that help give you forward power and grip when cornering

Others will have the fifth gear as their top gear, while some will have the sixth gear. It's important to know your top gear as it's where you'll be reaching your fastest.

In a nutshell, the first up to fourth gears are mainly for acceleration and control. Fifth and/or sixth gear helps you with speed.

It's best to shift your weight towards the back part of the bike when riding muddy surfaces.

When riding while standing, your feet's middle part should be balanced on the dirt bike's pegs.

Lean slightly forward; your arms should be up and elbows should be out

Keep a finger or two on the dirt bike's brake levers and clutch all the time.

Always wear your helmets. If you wish, you can also wear knee and elbow pads for your safety.

Tricks

Those 125cc dirt bikes can also perform tricks: they can jump high off a hill or ramp or pop wheelies to cross rocks, trees and other obstacles on the ground.

It may sound easy, but the skilled riders actually practice for years so that they can perform their seat grabs, no-handers and back flips just right.
