Belize has the longest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere and provides a combination of mild inshore scuba diving and some more daring oceanic dive locations for the knowledgeable divers. Belize offers scuba divers with a heady concoction of reef, wall, cay and cavern diving experiences.
Belize had a history of flamboyant buccaneering in days gone by. At that time, there were routine pirate attacks on Spanish treasure ships. Now, it is a peaceful little city on the Caribbean coast of Central America.
Belize is a popular diving destination since of its large barrier reef, which offers an array of diving experiences for all levels of scuba diving effectiveness, from the rookie newbies to the skilled veteran divers.
The barrier reef is approximately 174 miles or 280 km long extending along the shore of the Yucatan Peninsula in the north to Honduras in the south. In this way, the reef really produces a real barrier in between the ocean and the coast therefore offering calm waters to scuba dive in.
There are also many islands dotting the reef which are called cays or cayes in this part of the world. In the south eastern part of the reef, there is a huge depression in the ocean floor of the Caribbean Sea and this developed 3 atolls called Glovers, Turneffe and Lighthouse. The atolls sit on 2 parallel ridges unlike the atolls of the Pacific, which grew out of volcanoes.
These atolls rise sufficient enough to the surface area to permit sunshine penetration triggering large coral and sponge growths. It is for that reason not unusual the Belize barrier reef is proclaimed as a world heritage and is the subject of intense preservation and defense.
Coral reefs in the Caribbean seas have a character of their own in that they do not have the very diverse system of the Indo Pacific reefs. They lay claim to beautiful individual corals and sponges.
Perhaps, the piece de resistance for scuba diving in Belize is the contrast of its aquatic environments ranging from bustling coral neighborhoods on mild sandy slopes to high drop offs with huge pelagic fishes and sharks.
Scuba scuba divers will find smaller sized coral communities in inshore reefs. These inshore reefs are the home of about 500 species of fish including the 5 separate species of butterfly fish. It is here that encounters with bigger aquatic animals such as the manatees, whale shark, jewfish, manta rays prevail occurrences.
Do include Belize in your diving travel plan.
