When you wrote Alcohol Lied to Me did you have any idea how many people it would go on to help?

Not at all, like all my books I work on myself and then share what I have learned in the process. I never sit down to write a book thinking 'I wonder if this will be a bestseller'. Life is a process of never ending learning and for me sharing what I have learned is a passion.

Alcohol was destroying my life from all angles, it had me surrounded and it was winning. My health was going down hill, my marriage was beyond repair and I was turning out to be a crappy father.

It gives me enormous pleasure to know that Alcohol Lied to Me has helped so many similar people out of the vicious trap of alcohol addiction.

How bad was your own drinking problem?

I was drinking between one and two bottles of wine a night with a bottle of whiskey thrown in at the weekend. A lot of people will say 'that doesn't sound too bad', but that's only because we have become so used to having alcohol around us that nearly everyone we know drinks to excess.

My biggest problem was alcohol had become my solution to everything. If a large credit card statement arrived in the mail, the first thing I would do is go to the liquor store and buy a bottle of vodka. That vodka would put me into a coma for the night and the worry over the debt would go away.

Of course the debt always came back in the morning and brought it's friend Harry Hangover along for the ride.

Have you ever been tempted to drink again?

Honestly Yes, and I had to sit thinking why that was for the longest time. What I worked out was it is not the alcohol I wanted but rather the theatre that comes with it.

It was a incredibly hot day in Cyprus and I was in a bar with my friend Mike. I ordered a Tonic Water and he went for his usual pint of beer. My drink came in a straight glass which was placed on a coaster. His drink came is a Chalice, not a simple glass. It was an exquisite carved goblet that had been supplied by the drinks manufacturer. Not only that the bar tender kept these glasses in the freezer so when they were served to the customer they crackled and puffed white mist everywhere.

At the time I was a little panicked because I thought I was craving the alcohol my friend was drinking. Only later once I had removed myself from the situation did I realise I was jealous of the drama and performance of serving alcohol. I felt like I was getting plain old water while my friend was being treated to something special. This is all part of the illusion of alcohol and why so many struggle to escape alcoholism.

Are there some people who just can't be helped?

No everyone can escape alcohol addiction but what I will say is some people can't be helped YET! You have to be at the point where you desperately want to stop drinking. I can't help people who don't want to stop, I don't even try – they simply don't want to buy what I am selling.

What advice would you give you anyone who has just stopped (as a result of reading your book)?

In a few months time you are going to forget about a lot of the bad things that alcohol did to you and your family. You may be at a social event and someone offers you a free glass or champagne, or you might be watching the ball game with your friends and someone says 'come on just one won't hurt'.

This is the innocent trap door that will start all the misery again – just one drink will pull you straight back under, no matter what you think or what your friends say.

Never go back to the poison.
