In Canada three to six million Christmas trees are produced each year. Christmas tree production in Canada is a profitable business, the value of freshly cut Christmas trees is an estimated $65 million every year. In Canada Christmas trees are produced in a non-contaminated cold winter environment, these conditions allow the Christmas trees to flourish. Christmas tree production occurs all over the world on Christmas Tree Farms.
Adam Stone is director of the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association and also runs a wholesale Christmas tree company "Hilltop Christmas Tree Farms" which with his wife Natalie is a family run business with over twenty years of experience in the industry, their farms are located across the province of New Brunswick. Hilltop are a major supplier of freshly cut wholesale Christmas trees in the province, and they specialize in providing retailers based within the United States and Canada with wholesale Christmas trees. At Hilltop Christmas tree farms they believe in producing quality of trees to retailers. Adam Stone is head of the company and is known as leading authority within the industry, he has more than twenty years of experience in commercial Christmas tree production, and he is also president of the New Brunswick Christmas tree association, where they organize annual meetings and field days so that the growers can keep up with the growing industry, and they can learn and receive training on new techniques and current best growing practices.
Hilltop Christmas Tree Farms stock a variety of trees, alongside wreaths and Christmas tree stands. They specialize in producing two of the most popular species sold by retailers in the US and Canada, these two species are, the Fraser fir which is a very popular species that grows naturally at elevations above 5,000 feet, this tree has dark green needles that are half an inch to one inch in length, it also has excellent needle retention along with a nice scent. The Balsam fir is one of the best sellers, it is a beautiful pyramidal tree that is a nice dark green color with short, long-lasting, aromatic needles, and this tree generally reaches heights of 40 to 60 feet, and is very fragrant. These two species are offered at competitive prices.
The prices in Christmas trees have risen again due to a shortage of trees. For taller trees where the shortage is more severe, prices have risen by as much as 36%. Wholesalers say that rising demand and a lack in the number of trees planted could see most prices rise by 10% or more. The shortage in trees in the U.S has been caused by a fungus that has been killing off a lot of the county´s stock. This fungus affects mostly the Fraser fir as it is particularly vulnerable to the disease, browning out the needles and killing the tree in a matter of months. This fungus only affects the tree farms in North Carolina. As a result, the Fraser fir is in short supply and high demand.
Retailers have started selling their Christmas trees sooner than usual. Because it means they can have their trees out at full price for a longer period of time. Retailers think it makes sense to put holiday merchandise out earlier than usual to attract the customers that are doing their early Christmas purchases. Because a considerable amount of consumers will pick out their Christmas merchandise earlier to space out holiday purchases. Retailers are happy to oblige as it benefits them being able to sell all of their merchandise.
