The thing that hit home to me this week was that different levels of
people are in different conversations.

We have put effort into jobs, projects, investments and businesses for
over 30 years now.

After doing stuff for 30 years hopefully you have a few wins and can
position yourself so that you don't have to live hand to mouth.

When we first started out we had jobs and we saved money, whereas today
we have businesses and use structures to grow money.

I have always thought and still think jobs serve a useful purpose, I
have really loved the jobs I did over the years.

To transition to a business owner I had to put in extra effort outside
of my jobs. So outside of my jobs, I have gotten used to putting in an
extra 20 to 25 hours a week.

This can be very very difficult when you have a marriage and have kids,
maintaining the balance is challenging.

I had to learn to make decisions and I had to learn to take calculated
risks.

Over the years I had to become my own financial controller where I would
do our quarterly GST accounting reports and also our annual tax returns.

Preparing these types of reports taught me to watch my costs, and even
today I still harp on about costs. I love profits but costs can kill you
if they get out of control.

I have had to prepare many financial submissions to present to financial
institutions, and this type of thing gets you to think about different
aspects of growing money.

The statement "it's not what you make that counts, it's what you get to
keep that counts even more" is true in my experience.

So back to the original statement, different levels of people are in
different conversations.

These days I like to talk about the idea of wealth creation and the
effort and the type of thinking that's behind it as opposed to making
money.

Working because you want to work is a very different concept from
working because you have to work to survive.

Making money from your physical effort is a very different concept to
creating a situation where you don't have to depend on your daily
effort to live.

So depending on where a persons at in their own financial literacy
these conversations can be totally unrelatable.

If a person is so transfixed on just surviving, it can be very difficult
for them to make long term decisions which require extra time and effort
so they can eventually thrive.

Here is something I heard marketing guru Zig Ziglar say once "be preared
to do more than you are paid to do and then eventually you will be paid
more for what you do".
