People may think that gold can only be worn, used as tools, or interpreted as a status symbol. It, however, can also be used for investing and trading. It can be used to store wealth and protect an investor against inflation. Buying gold today is like buying a basic commodity. It is influenced by supply and demand. Investors who hoard and trade large amount of it can also make drastic changes to the market. But why do investors keep gold in bulk? Investors usually hold and buy gold bullion to protect their interests and wealth during economic crises. Buying large amounts of gold means his massive wealth is converted into shiny objects that will never ever lose value, no matter what the economy dictates.
A bullion is a just a precious metal in bulk quantity. They can be gold, silver, platinum or palladium. Its value is based on the purity of the metal and its mass or weight. This is in contrast to money, where it is measured in perceived value. A metal bullion, or in this case, a gold bullion, can either be:
cast as an ingot - molded bars, which are usually used as a currency reserve; or
minted into coins - used as legal tender, but its worth is based on bullion content and not on face value
But why do people buy gold bullion, and why not just rely on money alone for investing? As stated above, money is only worth its face value. It is just a symbol for a country where its value is dictated by the current government. Money can lose its purchasing power through inflation. Money can also be devaluated based on actions of the current government, or because of global sentiments. One may contend that money is just paper, and it has no inherent value.
Gold, on the other hand, was once the standard "money" used by most, if not, all countries. This fact is based on history. Unless the gold is illegally manipulated, its value cannot change overtime. Its intrinsic value remains constant, even in the event of the removal of the current government, or to the invasion of external forces.
Is it better then to buy gold bullion? How about if I just trade for stocks and nothing else? An investor trades for stocks when the economy is stable. He buys gold to protect him when the economy is not. He can minimize the risk of failing big in the stock market thru diversification of his investment portfolio: invest in stocks and invest in gold. The stock market and the economy are not significant when assessing the price of gold. It is the supply and demand, and the bulk trading of gold that factors in the fluctuating value of the metal.
How about buying paper assets of gold? Is it better to buy the paper instead of the real one? People rather buy the paper asset of the gold instead of the gold bullion itself. This is the suggested strategy if the investor's financial goal is to trade quickly and easily. Having paper assets saves the investor of dealing with the storage and security headaches. The problem only becomes obvious when an unexpected disaster occurs. This may result to the destruction of either the paper the investor has, or the facility where the gold is kept. The gold itself may be affected, as well. Therefore, it is better to also diversify your gold investment portfolio: buy paper assets for short term investments, and buy gold bullion for long term goals.
There is nothing wrong with trading stocks, relying on money, or using paper assets. The option to buy gold bullion lies solely to an investor's overall investment strategy .
