Engagement rings are a vital part of the Western culture. They are worn particularly by women as a gift from her prospective husband to bind her into matrimony. Engagement and wedding rings are different, although in some countries they are regarded as the same therefore some couples may each have a matching engagement ring. While most men prefer to keep their proposal and ring selection as a surprise, it has become a norm for many couples to choose an engagement ring together.
The price depends on many factors. The stone is the biggest factor that influences the price. Beside the price, it is what men decide on. The size, color and the kind and cut of stone are the biggest concerns of women. Next, the proper setting must be ensured to take advantage of the beauty of the stone. The kind of metal used and the design will also influence the ring's appeal. Men and women can choose from silver, platinum and alloys of gold. Gold jewellery can have different colors and luster depending on the alloy used. A 12 carat gold is composed of 50% gold and 50% alloy. 18 carat gold has 75% gold. Pure gold or 24 carat gold is too soft to be fashioned as an engagement ring. The kinds of alloy used allow gold to appear in different colors. You can browse from yellow, white, peach and green gold.
Basic Parts of an Engagement Ring
Shank
The shank is the main band of the ring that wraps around the finger. It may have stones embedded in it. The center stone determines the width of the shank.
Mounting
It is the entire metal (excluding the center stone) that makes up the ring. When it is embedded with accent diamonds and side stones, it is called semi-mounting.
Prong or bezel
It is part of the head that holds the center and side stones. Prongs hold the center and side stones whereas bezels wrap encircle the stones in the head, concealing the gallery. Prongs bend at a stone's girdle to form a claw.
Gallery
It is the space starting from the crown of a stone towards the tip of the upper shank. It can be left bare or designed with delicate metal work.
Head
The head is the part of the ring that is raised from the shank. It contains the center stone, prongs, bezels and side stones. The head can be an integrated head or a peg head. An integrated head is made from one piece of metal whereas a peg head is made from a separate head soldered to the shank.
Center Stone
It is the main stone of the ring. The flat top of center stones is called the crown. If the ring has 3 stones, the other 2 stones are called side stones.
Halo
Halos are small diamond pav surrounding the center stones of some engagement rings.
