The higher the gold content, the more resistant is the jewellery to tarnishing. However, high gold content guarantees low durability because gold is a soft metal.

When gold is alloyed, its original color is altered . A gold alloy made from 75% gold, 9% copper and 16% silver will yield yellow gold. White gold is composed of 75% gold, 4% copper, 4% silver and 17% palladium. Other metals will make a gold alloy colored peach, black, pink and even green.

The use of gold is not limited to jewellery. This beautiful metal is also used in the electronics, computer, glassmaking, medicine and dentistry. Gold is an excellent conductor of electricity.

Cleaning Gold Jewellery

Tarnish is an inevitable part of jewellery aging, but it doesn't have to be permanent. When it comes to cleaning and polishing jewellery, your jeweler has ionic, steam and ultrasonic techniques. Ask your jeweler which method is suitable for your gold.

Causes and Prevention of Gold Tarnishing

To prevent your gold accessories from tarnishing, make sure to allow adequate time for your perfume, lotion and deodorant to dry before wearing gold. You can expect gold jewellery with a higher carat to be more resistant to tarnishing but less durable. Gold with lower carat are more prone to tarnishing. Sulphur causes gold to tarnish very fast, almost instantly. Avoid handling garlic and onion when wearing gold fashion jewellery. Sweat also causes gold alloy to tarnish, especially those with a lower carat. Women having menstruation have a changed sweat chemistry, making gold tarnish faster. Sweat can get trapped inside the nooks of the jewellery, so make sure to always clean your gold with dishwasing liquid and water before storing it. Dry it for 24 hours after washing because speeds up tarnishing. When it comes to storage, always keep gold in a dry jewellery box, preferably protected from pollution and air.

Baking soda and toothpaste are not ideal for cleaning gold because they are abrasive. When drying gold, only use cotton and cotton fabrics. Avoid wood products such as tissue because they, too, are abrasive.
