Jewelleries come in different kinds. Costume jewelries use base metals such as copper, brass, nickel silver (German silver) and stainless steel. These are much easier to clean and to maintain. Costume jewelries are cheaper than fine jewelries. However, some costume jewelries use silver, too. Nevertheless, there are certain techniques for cleaning and polishing jewellery. If you own a special branded jewellery, be assured that the company or retail shop where you bought it from offers jewellery cleaning services.
Cleaning Silver Jewellery
Each metal used for jewellery deserves a dedicated cleaning method. Steel develops rust due to oxidation. However silver darkens or tarnishes when exposed to oxidation instead of getting rusty. Just like rust, tarnish is simply a dark layer of corrosion that forms over silver like a film. It can be hard to remove if you are not equipped with the proper knowledge. When your silver jewellery tarnishes, please do not try to scratch or file away the tarnished layer to bring back the shine it used to have. The dents and scratches would cause damage that will be more difficult and more expensive to repair because not only will you remove the tarnished surface, but also damage the silver layer under the tarnish.
Tarnished silver reacts with sulfur to form silver sulfide. Silver sulfide is a black compound. When a silver piece is only lightly tarnished, it would appear relatively grayer and duller. If the silver piece is heavily tarnished, it would appear black. When cleaning silver, the aim is to remove the silver sulfide coating. There are two ways that jewellers remove tarnish from silver. The first method is to remove the silver sulfide layer and the second method involves reversing the chemical reaction by turning silver sulfide back into silver. In the first method, a thin layer is inevitably removed in the process. That's because silver sulfide is still a part of the silver. The tarnish remover may be liquid or an abrasive polish. The second method uses aluminum and an electrochemical reaction to literally undo silver sulfide, resulting in silver and aluminum sulfide.
Causes of Silver Tarnish
Silver tarnishes because of prolonged exposure to air. Silver fashion jewellery must be displayed in air-tight places and display cabinets. Tarnish formation due to air exposure is much slower in comparison to exposure to sulfur or any chemicals containing sulfur. To delay the appearance of tarnish, use your silver pieces and wash it frequently with dishwashing liquid.
Tarnish versus Patina
Silver tarnish and silver patina are not the same. Patina is a gray and beautiful, lustrous layer over the silver whereas tarnish causes the silver to become dull. Silver tarnish covers the silver unevenly and may even appear dull yellow sometimes, especially when it's just starting to appear . If you notice your silver turning yellowish, be reminded that it is silver tarnish starting to form.
