LinkedIn is a remarkable platform but not everyone follows appropriate business etiquette. Networking is one thing - properly done, it serves both parties well and everyone prospers. Improperly done - it is simply spamming. Sending totally ill-suited 'offers' to LinkedIn members is viewed as spamming. Sending CPA offers for a dating site to the 3,000 people you are connected to is not networking - it is spamming. Don't do it. Period.
That being said, it happens. So - here is the situation ... and the resolution ... If you allow it, your LinkedIn 1st level connections will see your email address when you communicate with them via the LinkedIn messaging system, or by via the contact information in your profile, or even by exporting all of their contacts email addresses.
Regrettably, you will get emails that aren't important to you (and some that are simply outright spam), so it's wise to make your primary LinkedIn address an address that is not your main business email.
Solution:.
I recommend using a gmail, yahoo, or similar type of email, and I create a separate email box, and filter so that all incoming emails go directly to that box. This way, I can swiftly scan to split up the spam from the 'genuine' emails that I need to respond to. This makes my life a lot easier and in all honesty - I was surprised at the amount of spam that was being generated by unscrupulous people harvesting emails from LinkedIn - but this at least seems to have ceased them from cluttering up my main email!
To make a change your primary email address in LinkedIn, follow these steps:.
Go to your LinkedIn home page.
In the upper right of your LinkedIn home page, click on your profile picture.
On the dropdown, click "Privacy & Settings".
 Next click "Account ".
Now add your new email address.
Important note: LinkedIn will send you a confirmation email to make the change - be sure that you confirm it!
Once you have verified the change, you will need to make that email address your Primary email address. This will now be the only one your connections can see!
