It is not always an option to do indoor housebreaking or house training. Puppy owners should find a spot outdoors where their precious canine companions can answer the call of nature without receiving the ire of neighbors. The pooch must be taught not to dig and defecate where he shouldn't, especially the neighbor's flower patch. The owner must bring the dog outside every 2-3 hours to the same spot every day, so the little guy would get used to it and learn that this is where he should pee or defecate from now on.
The puppy must be brought outside 10-30 minutes after he eats or sleeps. Puppies usually feel the need to go potty (they would crouch, circle around, pace back, and forth or sniff the ground) after eating or upon waking up. The owner must wait quietly until the little one does his business. The puppy must not be pressured to do it quickly as the poor thing would get stressed. Man's furry friend should be praised and given a treat afterwards for exhibiting good behavior. However, the owner should never give the reward immediately and ensure that the puppy is not doing it in small portions just to get the treat then goes "full blast" when brought back inside.
When there are accidents, owners should be calm and not harshly scold or yell at their pooches. If you catch your pooch relieving itself in the wrong place, clap sharply twice so the little guy would stop, then bring him outside and let him do his business there. If the puppy loves being outdoors, the owner should not bring him back immediately after he relieves himself. The puppy might hold it in so he can stay longer outside to play then relieve himself inside. The bell method is another alternative in house training. Puppy owners should teach the puppy to ring the bells himself and signal the owner that he needs to go outside.
First, the owner must purchase bells and hang them on the doorknob or placed on the door using a string. If the puppy pees or defecates inside the house, the owner should hit the bells. This is to teach the puppy that urinating and defecating must be done outside. The bells should never be brought to and rang at the puppy at (especially at close proximity) when he does his business (or during "accidents" inside the home). It should be on the door the owner wants the puppy to go through whenever it's time to answer the call of nature.
To teach a dog to ring the bells, the bells must be dangled in front of his nose while saying,"touch". The dog will smell it and when his nose touches the bells, the owner should praise him and give a doggy treat. Repeating this training for a couple of times will teach the pup to ring the bells on its own upon the owner's voice command (or after pointing towards it). Eventually the dog will do it without any commands or hand gestures. Some puppies prefer to use their paws and should be trained with that preference in mind. The puppy must be trained to associate ringing bells with poo time and not with the desire to play outdoors.
Owners can keep a diary to track when their pooch relieves itself. People should know that very young pups cannot control their bladders and bowel movement. Puppies can only be trained effectively at 8-12 months old. They need a feeding schedule and should be given food appropriate for their age. Puppies should also have access to drinking water at all times. This helps in house training. Puppy owners should know that they will throw their dog's system out of whack and poo time would be more unpredictable if they feed their pets irregularly.
