To prevent accidents around the house, puppies should be taught potty training or undergo housebreaking. Puppy owners should know however, that puppies under 12 weeks old cannot control their tiny bladders yet. They will not know how to hold it in. They won't tell their owners when it's time to go. If the owner housetrains them early, puppies would only get the concept mentally and not physically. Training is only possible when they reach four to six months of age, but they are more capable of learning at 8 to 12 months old. At this stage, some puppies can be trained easily while others still take a little longer.
Puppies develop an instinct not to soil the "den" or the house (with the owner's constant guidance). To be successful at this, the owner needs to find a place within the house where the puppy can relieve itself. Housebreaking materials are available at pet stores, like pet stain and odor removers, washable training pads and toilets (looks like a patch of grass for them to defecate on). Housetraining needs to be consistent. Eventually the potty place would smell and feel familiar to the pooch so he would always do his business there.
The puppy should be followed and supervised at all times. The owner should know what the dog is doing. Puppies need a schedule for eating. After eating, the puppy will want to relieve itself after five to 30 minutes. Puppies also urinate when feeling separation anxiety, being submissive (when scolded or punished), or when they're excited. Pups also mark their territory with urine. This is common when dogs are unspayed (female) or unneutered (male) or when they see something new and meet other dogs. The owner can remove the puppy from things or places he does his marking on.
The owner can adopt a "Housebreaking taxi service" routine. In case the little one has to go, the owner will lift the puppy and put it where it should go (training pads or dog toilet). If the puppy is small, it can be crate trained. However, if it soils in the crate, the owner should never use that method again. The person should also never rush the puppy (vocally or otherwise) as it will get distracted and be stressed out. If the puppy is a small but heavy or of a bigger breed, an owner can use a leash to guide the pet where it should go. Even if there is success and the puppy finally gets the idea, sometimes he has a tendency to regress in house training. Puppy owners need not worry or panic as this is normal.
In case of accidents where the little guy does his business where he should not, the owner should not scold the puppy harshly or give punishment (the poor thing will be scared because he will not connect or remember things he has done minutes or hours ago). The person must always stay calm. He/She should quietly clean the feces or urine without any trace of scent left (leaving some will make the puppy do it at that area again next time). Using an enzymatic cleanser would be effective. The owner should avoid those that are ammonia-based as they attract the puppy to urinate there again.
If the puppy is caught in the act, the owner must say "no" and clap sharply twice to startle the puppy (it should stop what it's doing). If the pup becomes scared, the owner must clap softer next time. The person must once again be calm and place the puppy on the right area where it should relieve itself. However, even if puppies are house trained, urine and poo accidents or house soiling can still happen. It can be because of a health condition like Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), gastrointestinal upset, changes in diet or food and loss of bladder control. In this case, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately.
All in all, owners should be consistent in their pet's house training. Puppy lovers should be patient and eventually their efforts will pay off.
