The word s'more or smore, is a contraction of "some more" which is a frequently uttered phrase after tasting the delicious combination of graham crackers, roasted marshmallows and chocolate. Of course, there are other alternatives to the ingredients but everyone knows nothing else can satisfy a palate than the original. Since the recipe's publication in 1927, it has become a staple in camping trips and probably the highlight of it all when the campfire is set up. There is only one way to honor this classic camping snack and that is to make it-a lot of it.
First, have all the ingredients and utensils ready. Aside from the obvious graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolates, it is important to have reliable marshmallow roasting sticks as most of the steps will revolve around working with the open fire. The ones expertly made by Huggabe can lengthen to up to 31 inches which is more than enough space to keep campers safe from getting burned. Second, prepare the graham crackers and chocolate. The preferable size for a s'more is about 2 inches so make sure to break the graham cracker into that size. Place the chocolate on top of one graham. It doesn't have to be in the exact size as the cracker, in fact, it is better to be slightly smaller to prevent it from overflowing once it melts.
Third, skewer a marshmallow in each of the prongs. With the Huggabe smores sticks, a camper can roast two mallows at a time. There is no need to worry about the confection slipping off because each prong is grooved and designed to keep them in place. Fourth, slowly roast the marshmallows over coals to roast the sides without burning them. This slow process makes the smores stick the ideal utensil because it is lightweight and the wooden handles keep the hands cool even after prolonged use. The marshmallows are ready when they have fluffed twice as big as they were.
Finally, transfer the marshmallows to the graham and chocolate. Because the confection and roasting sticks are extremely hot, it is not advisable to handle them with bare hands. Carefully place the marshmallow on top of the chocolate, hold it in place using another graham cracker and slowly remove the skewer. The sturdy skewers from Huggabe should make this maneuver easy especially for the kids. Lightly press on the now sandwiched confection and allow it to melt the chocolate. Wait for everything to cool and voila! S'mores for the happy campers! Make as many as necessary.
It's just as important to clean-up afterwards so make sure to wash the s'mores sticks and fully retract them back to the wooden handles to keep the pointy tips out of the way and avoid unwanted incidents. Slip them back in their cases and tuck them away or if they need to be close by, campers can hook them to their belts.
S'more making is one camping tradition that won't be fading away anytime soon. It is better have trusted s'more sticks to get the most of it.
