Serial numbers are unique identifying codes for each unit and they also indicate the phone's manufacture and production date. The serial numbers will help you identify if an iPhone is refurbished or not. Newly released iPhones usually have serial numbers that start with 7K or 8K. Check the first digit of the serial numbers. Refurbished iPhones usually start with the number "5". The third digit indicates the year as to when the unit was manufactured. For example, if the third digit is "9", then it was manufactured in 2009. The fourth and fifth digit indicates the week of the year that it was manufactured.

Serial numbers are usually on the back case of the phone. You can also find it by turning the power on, go to the home screen, and then tap on 'settings'. Under settings, go to 'general', then tap on 'About'. From there, go to serial number. If the iPhone is turned off, you can check the SIM card tray. The serial number is printed on it.
When you buy refurbished iPhone online, inspecting the box and accessing the serial number isn't possible. You can ask the serial number from the seller. You won't necessarily have the entire serial number and some sellers may be hesitant to provide the serial numbers in full, so you can just ask for the first 5 digits because that would be enough for you to identify if it's a refurbished iPhone.
