Today I want to talk to you about telling stories. The best way to approach anybody is to tell them a story. Throughout history story telling has been a primary communication medium for people. In fact, the written word is relatively recent in human history. It is estimated that humans have been around for about 200,000 years while writing is about 4000 years old. So approximately 2% of human history is recorded with the written word.
Assume for example, you are building a network marketing business and you are approaching prospects. If you approach them with a sales pitch, "Hey Joe you know I have the best mousetrap since mousetraps were invented and you're gonna want one and in fact everyone you know's gonna want one... " You have just alienated Joe. You've pushed him away, he pulls back, gets defensive and turns a deaf ear.
Instead, tell Joe a story. Throughout history, people have used stories to convey a message. In fact, before recorded history, writing and printing presses, stories were all mankind had to pass important information down through generations of people.
So the ideal format for a story is:
Before ____________ I was_______________
The first thing I noticed was______________
Since then_____________________________
And the best part is _____________________
With that approach, you are giving people the benefit of your personal experience, you are attracting them to you and the most likely outcome is they ask for more information about how it works. So here is an example of how this works.
Before I discovered the widget, I had big toe disease. I could hardly walk my toe was so swollen. The first thing I noticed is that the swelling went down within 10 minutes of applying the widget. Since then I am able to walk without pain and the best part is I can now put on my sandals again and walk in them for a couple miles.
So again you see with that approach, the most likely response from someone is, "Wow that's really interesting, can you tell me more". Now we have captured our prospects attention in a non-threatening way and given them the opportunity to ask for additional information. We become the pursued instead of the pursuer. This approach makes it easy to talk to someone, even strangers without them feeling like you have cornered them and are "selling!!
