Opening a car door that is submerged is almost next to impossible due to the water pressure pushing on the door. One way to get out rapidly is by going through the window which would also be difficult to open underwater. So the only way of getting out would be to break open the window. If you are strong and have sturdy bones, you could use your elbow to try to shatter the glass, or you could kick the window hoping that it would break.
A better option would be to keep an emergency hammer available in just such predicaments. A real hammer would be fine but carrying it around in your car would be impractical. Besides, a real hammer should be in your tool shed where it ought to be. You need something that isn't as bulky as a real hammer, but just as effective in breaking a car window open. Something like a car emergency tool with an emergency hammer would be ideal in such a dilemma.
When trying to escape from a submerging car, do not try to break open the windshield as this is made of laminated safety glass and it would not be humanly possible to break it open. You should instead focus on breaking a side or rear window. The emergency hammer is usually a small device whose grip easily fits in the palm of your hand. To break open a car window with an emergency hammer, make sure to aim near a corner or the hinges. Only a moderate force is needed as you may cut your arm if you hit the window too hard with the hammer and your forearm goes through the broken glass. Besides, you don't need to exert that much force when you use an emergency escape tool.
Before you crawl out, remove any remaining pieces of glass before crawling through the window. To better deliver a moderate force, if you are at the driver's seat, use the heel of your right hand to give a sudden forceful but measured push against the butt end of the emergency hammer against the window while holding the hammer steady and aiming it with your left hand.
When escaping from a submerged vehicle, climb out the window as soon as possible and do not mind the onrushing water as you would be able to swim out to safety with minimal effort. Waiting for the water to completely fill the compartment of the vehicle would waste precious time and you need to inhale as much air as you can before the vehicle becomes completely filled with water.
Furthermore, the deeper you get, the more dangerous it becomes as the trapped air from the car that you breathe in at a deeper depth could cause lung damage. Thus, it would be better for you to breathe in while near the surface rather than inhaling the trapped air at a deeper depth. This will also allow you to work quicker in trying to break the window open and getting out.
