Traveling near water can turn out to be quite dangerous when an emergency situation suddenly happens. It would be wise to be ready in case of any possibility that a mishap could happen. Aside from the standard emergency paraphernalia such as a car jack and basic tools such as a tire wrench, pliers and screwdrivers, having a car emergency tool would be a good idea, especially one with an emergency hammer. Such a handy device should be kept near the driver when driving, such as attached to the keychain of the car keys or even on the driver's body for easy and ready access; hanging from a belt loop, for example.
In case the car falls into deep water, this car emergency tool would be needed to break open the window in order to escape. Opening the door would be useless if the accident happens in deep water. The pressure of the water outside the car would be too great to open the door from the inside; the only way to escape would be through the window. Destroying the window is easier than trying to push open the door. This can be done with a device such as a car emergency tool with an emergency hammer consisting of a pointed tip or something similar to what is commonly referred to as a center punch found in hardware stores. However, this car emergency tool is designed specifically to break windows with a hammer in just such predicaments.
Once the window is broken, it would be possible to crawl and swim out through the window after removing the leftover bits of glass still remaining in the window sill of the car. Remove these remnants of the window to make the opening bigger and to avoid lacerating yourself. If there are children riding with you, attend to them first by removing their seatbelts and helping them through the window. An infant would have to be the topmost priority as they are helpless to swim and must be carried throughout the escape.
If you become disoriented and you don't know where the surface of the water is, just follow the bubbles. If you become trapped under ice, swim toward the hole made by the impact of the vehicle. Upon reaching the surface, be prepared to grab hold of any floating objects. Remove any heavy clothes such as coats and jackets. These can become very heavy in the water and could cause you to tire easily and lose your strength preventing you from staying afloat. Also, if you fall into a river, for example, be aware of your surroundings such as boulders or large rocks where you could bump your head and lose consciousness. Protect your head as much as possible.
Keep your car emergency tool on you especially if it has a handy dynamo driven flashlight that could also be used to signal searching rescuers aside from showing you the way in the dark once you've reached shore and no rescuers are there yet.
