Hair loss is an inevitable part of aging. Men and women experience some form of hair loss and thinning at any point of their lives, but hair loss is more prominent among men. It can be a symptom of a serious health condition but hair loss itself poses no health risks. However, for men who prefer to have a head full of hair, hair loss can be disfiguring, especially if it starts from unlikely spots of the scalp. Lush hair is associated to youth. More and more men are finding it imperative to seek treatment for hair loss.
Hair Loss Statistics
The business for treating hair loss in men alone is worth billions. Rogaine is currently worth $1.2 billion. 35 million American men suffer from male pattern baldness. 40% of men are also unaware that male pattern baldness can be inherited through either parent.
Male Pattern Baldness (MPB)
Male pattern baldness (MPB) or androgenetic alopecia is responsible for 95% of hair loss cases in men. MPB starts at age 30. By the time men are 35 years old, 2/3 of them will start to see and feel noticeable hair loss or hair thinning. By the time they are 50, 85% of them will experience significant baldness. In some men, MPB starts as early as age 21. MPB is difficult to prevent because the effects on its early stages are barely noticeable. It is only by the time that a man have lost a significant number of hairs will he start to look for treatment for hair loss. Chances of MPB also match a man's age. Men in their 30's have a 30% chance for MPB.
Men with MPB have hair follicles that are highly sensitive to a more potent kind of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT will then reside in the hair's oil glands. These hair follicles will eventually start to shrink thus shortening the lifespan of their hair shafts. With constant exposure to DHT, these hair follicles will gradually stop producing hair. Hair follicles near the forehead, temples and on the crown are the most sensitive to DHT. Eliminating DHT is not recommended because it is important for other bodily functions, including production of lean muscle mass. Scientists have discovered that minimizing the hair follicles' exposure to DHT will cause the hair follicle to produce hair again.
Causes of Hair Loss in Men
MPB is just one of the many causes of hair loss. Hair loss is typically caused by certain medications, hair products (shampoo, hairspray, gel, wax, and pomade), genetics and stress. If your dad or a grandfather on your mother and father's side experienced hair loss, the possibility is that you are at risk, too. Heavy metals such as lead and arsenic also cause hair loss. Treatments to determine traces of heavy metals are very costly. Before you start to do buy expensive hair growth products, opt to use natural hair loss treatments first.
