Hair loss is not a monopoly of men. Women also experience hair loss or hair fall, only in varying degrees. Hair loss in women looks less apparent because women's hair is much longer than men', thus concealing any appearance of hair thinning. Hair loss has no serious health risks. However, it can be very disfiguring in women if it starts in the crown or shreds in large swatches, resulting to uneven bald spots. Men can comfortably opt to go bald or sport buzz cuts, but most women want to maintain their longer hair.
An average woman has around 100,000 strands of hair on the scalp and loses about 100 strands every day. Unlike men, the gradual progression of hair loss in women is more noticeable. There may be more hair strands left on the pillow, hairbrush, shower drain or hair accessories. Plus, women's hair can easily be spotted on the floor or bedding. With that said, women have a better chance to prevent and to find a treatment for hair loss.
Causes of Hair Loss in Women
Women tend to lose hair starting at the top half of the scalp, rather than experience a receding hair line like men. The part of women's hair can also appear wider. When women pull their hair back on a ponytail, the hair near the forehead may appear sparser, although the hairline remains the same.
Hair loss inevitably happens as a part of the hair follicles' reaction to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a more potent kind of testosterone present in both men and women, but are of higher concentrations in men. DHT gets collected in the scalp's oil glands therefore shrinking the hair follicles. The shrunken hair follicles will eventually lose the ability to hold hair. Longer exposure to DHT will eventually cause hair follicles to fail producing hair.
Hair loss is also an adverse reaction to certain medication, hair products, hair treatments and stress. Women whose hairs are chemically treated (rebounded, straightened, permed, colored) experience a greater degree of hair fall compared to women with healthier hair. In some cases, hair loss is due to bad diet and vitamin sufficiency. Too much sugar can cause the breakdown of collagen. Too much caffeine accelerates the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Lowering DHT levels is the quickest treatment for hair loss.
Pregnancy can also trigger hair loss. Some women have noticed more hair loss and weaker nails after having children. This is because of the sudden shift in sex hormones and the physical trauma brought by by giving birth. Moreover, the majority of the vitamins and nutrients in a mother's diet go to nourishing the unborn baby.
Women are more inclined to use natural hair loss treatments than men. When it comes to treating hair loss due to pregnancy, it is better to opt for vitamins, minerals and natural topical applications. However it can be difficult to self-medicate hair loss, but at the same rate, the treatments prescribed by doctors to cure hair loss are not all effective.
