More and more men are seeking natural hair loss treatments. Men have been widely stereotyped as the gender that does not care much about looks, but the contrary is the truth. Men want to resolve issues of hair loss as much as women want to have smooth, wrinkle-free skin. Unfortunately, most men have to battle against genetics to win back their hair. Male pattern baldness (MPB) can be also difficult to prevent. Unlike women, men do not notice long strands of hair that get collected on hair brushes, shower drains and pillows. Around 50% of a man's hair is gone before it becomes noticeable .
Finasteride and Minoxidil (Rogaine)
Male pattern baldness (MPB) occurs when men have hair follicles that are sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). When these hair follicles are constantly exposed to DHT, they shrink and eventually stop producing hair. Rogaine works by stimulating the hair follicles and increasing its diameter once again. Finasteride is originally intended to treat prostate enlargement but users of finasteride have reported side effects such as accelerated hair growth. Because of that, finasteride became a potential treatment for MPB.
In 1997, the FDA approved the use of finasteride as a treatment for MPB or androgenic alopecia. Finasteride is sold as Propecia or Proscar. Finasteride works by restricting the conversion of testosterone into DHT. A mere 60% reduction of DHT in the hair follicles leads to a boost in hair growth in 85% of men. 65% of them had what is called a "substantial hair growth." The American Hair Loss Association also approves the use of finasteride as a first line defense against male pattern baldness.
Another hair loss treatment is minoxidil (Rogaine). Just like finasteride, minoxidil was intended to treat another health condition. Doctors gave patients with high blood pressure minoxidil. These patients reported an increase in hair growth all over their body. Some men even experienced hair growth on their foreheads, back of the hands and cheeks. Because of this, researchers tried to apply minoxidil topically in an attempt to promote hair growth in desirable areas. However he effects of minoxidil are rather short term. Experts recommend using finasteride first for hair loss before trying minoxidil. Even the American Hair Loss Association does not advise using minoxidil as a first option to resolve hair loss.
Other hair loss treatments include stem cell treatment and hair transplants. Both are very expensive so it's ideal to try cheaper but trusted options first.
Look Out for Hypes
When looking for a treatment for hair loss, it is recommended to look at reputable sources. Rogaine is an established brand, but some men look for value in their money and want instant results right away so they tend to be persuaded by hype advertisements. In order to be sure about a hair loss treatment, you can search for the brand online. Any kind of treatment for hair loss should list their ingredients.
