History of Yarn
Crochet and yarn crafts and knitting all depend on yarn. People rarely stop to think how important yarn is to our daily lives. While clothing and blankets etc today are important for style and to help you stay toasty at one point in time yarn that produced clothing and blankets could keep you alive!
Yarn can be made from a host of natural and synthetic materials. Many people think about wool when they think of yarn because it is one of the first natural substances that were spun into yarn. In the early years of yarn everything was done manually. Harvesting the wool from the animals was done by hand. Spinning the wool into useful yarn was done by hand and finally knitting the yarn into something useable was done by hand.
Today most everything is done automatically by machine.
The History of Wool
No discussion about yarn is complete with the history of wool. It is estimated that sometime in 10,000 BC man discovered that wool could do something that nothing else material had been able to do. It could protect from all the elements. It could protect from the sun and cold and heat and wind. It stayed dry when it rained. It was a great material.
Initially the wool was stretched and spun by hand. The wool would be pulled and twisted, pulled and twisted for hours by hand to form long threads that would then be woven together to form cloth. This primitive yarn was the first evidence of yarn.
With time the spinning was delegated hand cranked machines and the knitting of the yarn was left to two hands and two needles.
The History of Cotton
Next up a few centuries later on was the discovery of cotton that grew in the ground that could be spun into fibers that would also produce a yarn. Cotton has a history that dates back about 7,000 years. There is evidence of cotton yarn that was stashed in brass beads around 5800 BC that was found in Pakistan.
The Synthetics
The never ending desire to improve on nature triggered the discovery of synthetic yarn. In the early 1800's when knitting was at its height and the new "crocheting and yarn" crafts appeared a new more sturdier material was invented. Polyester fibers were created in a factory and spun into yarn!
Yarn continues to be improved upon with an increasing number of options available annually. Look at all the yarn options at www.purlcityyarns.com!
