I hate the dentist. I've always hated the dentist because when I was really young, I had pneumonia which caused a lot of the dentine to come off my teeth, and so they have always been really sensitive and so I avoided the dentist like the plague. I've also had back pain for the last 20 years which I would self medicate myself with Voltaren and other NSAIDs (non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs ), but it wasn't up until very recently that I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is basically a form of Rheumatoid arthritis. This disease creates all sorts of pain in the hips, neck, legs, shoulders, lower back, and the worst part is the pain moves around, pretty much in a cycle.
About a month back my A.S flared up so bad I virtually could not walk, something had definitely triggered it to cause the most pain I have ever experienced with it over the last 20 years. After a visit to my Rheumatologist, I got certain blood tests completed and it appeared my ESR level, which is simply the test for inflammatory reaction, was at 94, normal is between 0-15. I was really surprised. Later that night over dinner, one of my teeth was aching as it always does every now and again, and I suddenly wondered if this tooth could possibly have something to do with my flare up.
The next day at my very first trip to the dentist in 7 years, the x -ray revealed a root canal gone bad, and in the dentists words" Chronic infection".
During the following week I read everything I could about this and found that there was medical research associating infected teeth to triggering auto-immune diseases. I eventually got the tooth pulled as it was irreparable and the dentist informed me it was so infected that there was pus. Not good.
Around 2 weeks later I got the ESR test again and it had reduced to 45, my rheumatologist was amazed, although definitely not normal it was half of what it was.
I returned to the dentist to have the stitches out and mentioned to him about the new test results and he said he wasn't surprised. Not only that he told me that I needed a scale and clean badly, and I had 4 other teeth that need attention. Right after he had finished the scale and clean, he told me that my gums are now completely inflammed. I really did not really understand, so he explained that due to the fact that I hadn't been brushing correctly, bacteria was allowed to build up, basically causing plaque but also leaving my gums in an unhealthy state. He gave me some dye to place on my teeth and showed me how to brush them so that all the dye was removed, which I have to do for 3 months until I really know how to clean them. I really had no idea about any of this and I'm planning to do the ESR test in another 3 months, which my dentist firmly feels will be lower again.
I can not say for sure whether this will put my A.S into remission or not, but it has held true for other people, and for a trip to the dentist to check on the state of your teeth, its definitely worth it.
